The Process of Family Leadership—Dad Edge Alliance Exclusive Q&A with Errol Doebler

We are all going to go some day. What kind of culture do you want to leave behind for your family and the generations to come?

We have an intense experience for you today. Errol Doebler, former Navy SEAL and FBI Special Agent, is back on the show. He is a husband, a father of three, and the author of The Process, Art and Science of Leadership.

Errol participated in a live event with the Dad Edge Alliance, where more than 70 men had the opportunity to listen to his arsenal of family leadership training and got a chance to ask him questions on how to use the process of leadership to become strong leaders for their families.

Errol explains how the leadership strategies used for battle are the same we need to use in the boardroom and the home. In this behind-the-scenes peek into the Dad Edge Alliance, you will learn how to gain trust, earn respect, and form an unbreakable family team.

What You’ll Learn

  • Great teams (and families) are not made by who is on them, but how they operate.
  • It’s up to the leader (the father) to create a space where everyone feels like they can speak up.
  • Communication is the main part of the planning process. You need the team’s contributions.
  • We can unwittingly create silence. We have to break that down and develop an environment of psychological safety.
  • Each member gets equal input. Do not let a few dominate.
  • Teammates must be in tune with each other’s emotions and needs to be successful.
  • Before enforcing accountability, make it clear what kids have to be accountable for.
  • Autonomy—we want kids to take initiative. We establish what we want them to do and why we want them to do it. Then we let them tell us how.
  • What to do when you’ve blown up at your kids
  • Why we must apply the same mindset to times of calm as to times of chaos
  • How to regain trust and respect from your wife and/or family when you’ve lost it
  • How to reestablish leadership when you’ve given it up
  • How to execute even when you’re feeling fear
  • How to define and enforce codes of behavior

How to Stop Being A Miserable F*ck with John Kim

How to Stop Being A Miserable F*ck with John Kim

Sometimes, the men who seem to have it all together are the ones who are suffering the most. Today’s guest John Kim was a licensed therapist and a life coach who was unfulfilled and hating life. A divorce forced him to begin looking inward and start his blog called The Angry Therapist to share his journey from being a boy to becoming a man.

John Kim just published his book, I Used to Be a Miserable F*ck: An Everyman’s Guide to a Meaningful Life, in which he shares his “self-help in a shot glass” tips on how to step into manhood and live a life of purpose and passion! Learn about man dates, bedroom mistakes, and why you shouldn’t pee in the shower.

John Kim

John Kim practices complete authenticity and transparency with his many clients (frowned upon in the clinical world) and continues to look for new and unconventional ways to help people. He created the Catalyst Life Coaching Course, an online life coaching certification program, and recently started a new platform called SHFT, an app that gives people support in their pocket when they need it and the chance to become a life coach themselves. John Kim lives in Los Angeles where he makes videos on his phone, CrossFits, and rides his motorcycle to coffee shops to do sessions.

His parents did the best with what they had. They came to America from Korea with no money. They were always working and living in survival mode. His father wasn’t available emotionally and was an alcoholic. A child of the 80s, pop culture raised John and he found self-worth in skateboarding and breakdancing.

As John became and adult, he realized that all he thought he wanted wasn’t bringing him happiness. When he became a therapist and began working for non-profits, he witnessed the byproducts of dads being absent—physically and emotionally. He thought about his own childhood and how the cycle of dysfunction, codependency, and addiction starts with fatherless homes. He often wondered, what are men missing?

Defying All Odds with Anthony Trucks

Anthony Trucks…defying the odds.

Victim of circumstance. That is not who Anthony Trucks is. Growing up as a foster child, he chose not to fall into the stigma of the statistics for many foster children. Instead, he used that societal assumption as a catalyst for his life. He decided that he would go against the presumed outcome of foster children as failures in life and challenged all preconceived notions. With a passion for football, and the support of his foster parents, Anthony succeeded in playing college ball, going on to professional football and then on to a successful entrepreneurship in  motivating others.

Go Against the Assumptions

Just because there are statistics and societal assumptions regarding various life situations, does not mean we are doomed to fall into them. It takes an active choice to live life differently from those assumptions. No, it’s not easy, but choosing how to live your own life, despite your circumstances, allows you to break free from societal notions of how you should live your life. It’s a conscious decision to be how you choose to be, rather than how others believe you should be.

Anthony Trucks on Setting the Example

A common theme on the GDP is setting the bar for our kids. Every action we take is imprinted on their very impressionable minds. If we choose to be victims, more than likely, our children will learn those very behaviors. Without making the deliberate choice to live differently, we choose to have outside influences make the choice for us. However, if we learn how to live beyond our circumstances and change our perceived outcome, our children learn to beat the odds as well and develop skills to overcome life’s challenges.

Being Grateful

You’ve heard this a time or two on the GDP as well. While we may not be able to control our circumstances, we can control our response to them. Instead of wondering why bad things happen to us, look at those situations with gratitude. This choice affords us the opportunity to learn to make things better. After all, without those situations, we could not grow into better people.
