Marriage Skills for Men

How’s your marriage? Great? Okay? Bad? Could it be better?

Of course it could, but we are never taught marriage skills. We expect our relationship to work by default, but it’s not going to get better on its own. Marriage takes constant, intentional work. No relationship runs on autopilot no matter how much a couple loves each other.

John Barbee felt he was failing as a husband and a father. He realized he was only participating with his family on a surface level. One day, he decided to take action and shape his relationship with his wife. This involved communication, partnership, friendship, and intimacy. Mostly, it involved investing in himself.

Now John’s excited about his marriage again and is here to share his marriage skills for men. Get ready to finally learn how to fill your marriage with possibility again!

Never give up on your marriage.

What You’ll Learn

  • The accelerated growth and phenomenal change that happens when you start to take care of yourself
  • John always thought that just being in the room with his kids while watching TV was “being present” in their lives.
  • We say “yes” to all the things and can only give a fraction of the effort. What is really important?
  • The difference between quitting and prioritizing what matters
  • It’s up to you to direct your marriage and update your knowledge on how to cultivate a rich family life.
  • Good sex does not mean you have a good relationship.
  • What happens when you grow and those around are not changing? Can you outgrow your marriage?
  • What turned John’s marriage around?
  • Who can men really go to about problems in their relationships?
  • We often live in superficial connection.
  • How to take on deep conversations with your spouse
  • Involve questions that connect. Did you ever ask what makes your wife happy? What makes her upset? What are her likes, dislikes?
  • Why it’s important to understand your spouse’s childhood
  • Stop trying to fix your spouse. Love her for who she is right now.
  • Work on yourself. Be patient. When you start growing, you want everyone to grow with you, but everyone has their own pace. If you are your best self, you are helping them to become their best.

How to Thrive in the Face of Uncertainty

We all want to survive this crisis, but how can we leverage the challenges we face to actually accelerate our growth as men, husbands, and fathers? How do we use adversity as an opportunity to connect and learn in ways we never have before?

It is possible to thrive in the face of uncertainty if we look at every problem as a stepping stone to greater self-awareness and purpose. In this exclusive episode, we will teach you how.

Today we talk about the first Dad Edge Virtual Summit and the 3rd annual Dad Edge Live Summit. You will witness exactly what happens behind the scenes in The Dad Edge Alliance and the changes that take place in the lives of men who work as a tribe. Jeff Bouwman and Jason McKenzie join us, along with our members for an amazing session that shows just how everyday regular dads are reframing their challenges, using them as catalysts for extreme transformation.

What You’ll Learn

  • What is the appreciative inquiry technique?
  • The power of bringing people together to connect in meaningful ways
  • How to reframe challenge into opportunity
  • How crisis can force an evolution of the family in a positive way
  • How to be present during times of stress, see the beauty in every moment, and find something to be grateful for no matter what
  • How to stay curious
  • The power of asking yourself the right questions
  • Stop thinking about all we can’t do during this crisis. What can we do?
  • Letting go of expectation to become open to possibility
  • Being aware of the stories you tell yourself
  • How to tell if you’re acting from a place of fear

IT’S TIME TO RE-INVENT HOW WE SHOW UP FOR OUR FAMILIES

Coronavirus is forcing our evolution as fathers.  We are all going to build a whole new set of superpowers.  And these superpowers are needed right now.  For many of us, we are multiplying our future ability to serve, exponentially.

The lessons we are learning now will only enhance what’s possible in the future.  Pause for a second.  Consider what we are really in service of.  There’s a good chance that we are going to serve a mission much… much… bigger than the one we thought we were here to serve.

Somewhere on the other side of this, maybe we are ushering in a golden era of sorts.  The thing that has taken so much blame for causing distraction, disconnection, even isolation – technology… is now the only solution we have, to bring us all together.  And it will.  History shows that hardship is always the pathway to breakthroughs!

YOU WILL NOT WANT TO MISS THIS.

How Dads Can Set a Powerful Example for Their Kids

How Dads Can Set a Powerful Example for Their Kids

Showing has much more impact than telling. When we show our kids how we live according to our values, they see integrity in action. They know we walk the talk.

Today’s guest, Chris, is an everyday dad and one of our new members in The Dad Edge Alliance. He talks about the importance of being aware of how closely our kids are watching us and the messages we are sending them with our behavior. He also gives us his simple yet brilliant ideas on how dads can set a powerful example for their kids in small ways every day.

We’re all dads for the first time.

What You’ll Learn

  • From the moment your kids are watching you, you’re teaching them.
  • What life lessons do you want to teach your kids?
  • How to instill work ethic
  • Showing your sons how to treat women
  • Examples of how to actively and intentionally set a powerful example for your kids. E.g. Make sure that when your kids wake up in the morning, they see you exercising, reading a book, or some other constructive habit.
  • Fathering according to personality
  • How to try to make sure kids don’t pick up on your bad habits
  • The importance if realizing you’re not alone as a father

Nothing will humble you more than trying to be a father.

living your authentic life

Living Your Authentic Life

Are you living your authentic life? What if you have everything that’s supposed to make you happy and you’re still miserable?

On today’s show, we have Dad Edge Alliance member and everyday dad, Josh Long. Josh had a very successful 16-year career that he hated. He was so hungry for significance in his life, that he threw himself into volunteering for his community. He eventually ran for city council and won. Everything looked very admirable on the outside, but inside he was dying.

Josh was overcommitted and stressed. He began to rely on alcohol to cope. His marriage was in crisis, and he started investing emotionally in another woman. He was living a life of quiet desperation, until he took a hard look at what he was giving his time and energy to and realized he was living for the wrong reasons.

Listen to how Josh saved his marriage, became a better father, and started living a life according to his true values.

“We have to rebuild ourselves before we rebuild our marriages.”—Josh Long, The Dad Edge Alliance

Self-Compassion and Accountability for Dads

Self-Compassion and Accountability for Dads

As men, we are usually are all or nothing. We have the tendency to set extreme goals, and if we have one setback, we take that as proof we can’t succeed and give up entirely.

But if we practice both self-compassion and accountability, we can forgive ourselves, dust off, and get back on track.

Today, we have one of our Dad Edge Alliance Mastermind Commanders on the show, Paul Richardson. He’s in charge of ensuring the men on his team are executing their plans.

Paul says we won’t be motivated all the time, and that’s okay. It doesn’t mean we can’t stay on the path to success.

Instead of beating ourselves up for the bad days, we must learn to trust the process, asking for help along the way. We can grow at our own pace, forgiving ourselves when we have a setback and loving ourselves enough to be patient.

Discover the power of self-compassion and accountability for dads in this short episode!
