The Real, Transparent, Imperfect Dad with Tim Kennedy

As fathers, it’s our natural instinct to act like everything is under control. We don’t want our kids to see us failing or hurting. We don’t want to appear weak. But true strength lies in being real, and if we don’t allow our kids watch how we navigate the ups and downs in life, they won’t know how to deal with adversity themselves.

We have an awesome guest for you today. Green Beret, Special Forces Sniper, and former top 5 UFC Middleweight, Tim Kennedy, is on The Dad Edge! He is one of the few fighters to serve in the military and fight professionally at the same time. Tim’s the creator of Sheepdog Response, a training program that gives good guys the tools they need to effectively respond to violence. He’s also been married for 13 years and is the father of four kids.

Tim Kennedy talks about how his parents balanced nurturing, protection, and damage control. He tells us why he appreciates the highs and lows of parenthood. He also reveals his biggest failures in life and why being a real, transparent, imperfect dad is what our kids really need.

“You’ve got to let your kids have room to spread their wings. You have to give them enough rope to literally hang themselves, which I did.”—Tim Kennedy

Tim Kennedy

Timothy Kennedy is a retired, professional mixed martial artist who has competed in the UFC’s Middleweight division. He has also formerly competed for Strikeforce, the WEC, ShoMMA, HDNet Fights and represented the Chicago Red Bears in the IFL. Kennedy is one of the few fighters to simultaneously serve in the United States Army National Guard while also fighting professionally.

Tim Kennedy is a Ranger qualified, Green Beret, Special Forces Sniper with tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as other locations around the globe. Tim serves with the Special Operations Detachment (A) as a Senior Special Forces Weapons Sergeant.

Married with has three daughters and a son, Kennedy played himself in the Indie film Range 15 and is a co-owner of Ranger Up, a military-based clothing company.

Sheepdog Response

The sheepdog exists to protect the vulnerable from the wolves. People face threats of violence every day, ranging from large-scale terrorism to one-on-one assaults. Most people are unprepared, unequipped, and untrained to respond effectively. This weakness in the flock allows the wolves to attack with great ease and success. This is precisely why Sheepdog Response has developed a curriculum that addresses the skills you need to successfully respond to threats.

“Hurry up and fail.”—Tim Kennedy

How to Teach Kids to Protect Themselves

How to Teach Kids to Protect Themselves

The world can be a dangerous place, and our kids are especially vulnerable. From bullying and abuse to abductions and shootings, how can we shield our children from danger? More importantly, how can we teach them to respond to violence when we aren’t with them?

Today we have Dad Edge Alliance member Adam Mitchell. He is a personal protection expert who specializes in tactical parenting. He is also the host of the Close Quarter Dad Podcast and Training Program.

In this episode, we do a live Q&A with our members on how to teach kids to protect themselves. Adam answers questions about why dads should train with their kids, when they should begin showing them self-protection strategies, and how to train kids to be vigilant, but not fearful.

This is a show every dad needs to hear to keep his family safe. Plus, look out for a special offer at the end of the interview.

Adam Mitchell and Close Quarter Dad

“My name is Adam Mitchell, I have been teaching children and families martial arts for over 20 years. About 13 years ago I started noticing a pattern. In most cases it would be the moms engaging in their kids’ martial arts classes, and the dads would usually stay away or wait out in the parking lot.

It turns out these dads where at loss with how to prepare their kids for facing difficulties in life. In fact, they felt a bit embarrassed that another man was teaching their kids how to defend themselves instead of them.

This feeling of being “replaced,” when their kids looked up to their martial arts teacher instead of their dad, was driving a split between the dads and their kids.

So after a lot of trial and error trying to get the dads involved, I came to the realization that I needed to empower the dads to take back the role of teaching their kids how to stand up for themselves. So that they would be the ones preparing their kids for the challenges they are going to face in their lives.

That slowly turned into the Close Quarter Dad program, giving dads parenting tactics to not only teach their kids how to defend themselves, but also how to achieve success, learn life and management skills, become decisive, and the many other aspects involved in raising happy, healthy and well-adjusted kids.”

I recognized that there are 5 tactics, or core areas of tactical parenting, that dads need to become the most important guardian in their kids’ lives.

Modern Survival for Dads

Modern Survival for Dads with Mike Glover

For many of us, it’s a challenge just to get through the day. We’re stuck on the hamster wheel, running as fast as we can to nowhere. Not only do we lack clarity around our paths in life, but we also lack situational awareness when it comes to the daily environment around us. The world is not always a safe place, and complacency is deadly.

Today we have Mike Glover on the show. He’s an ex-Special Forces soldier, the host of the Modern Mindset 365 Podcast, and the founder of Fieldcraft Survival, where he teaches everyday people how to be prepared for any catastrophic event, accident, or natural disaster.

Mike teaches us modern survival for dads, which includes being empathetic, resilient, and deliberate in our actions. He also talks about how to protect our families and teach our kids what to do when their lives are in danger.

“Small victories accumulate into success.”—Mike Glover

Mike Glover

Mike Glover spent most of his life in the Army serving as an infantryman and Special Forces soldier. He started his career as a Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier where he learned Honor and Respect. After September 11th he tried out for US Special Forces where he served the remainder of his career in multiple positions including: Sniper, JTAC, Recon NCO, Team Sgt, Sgm, Breacher. He developed his mindset and the practice that he teaches today during his combat rotations in austere environments all over the world.

After being promoted to Sergeant Major in Special Forces, he began contracting with the US Government operating overseas, protecting government officials in dangerous environments. After his service and contracting days, he started a successful business called Fieldcraft Survival dedicated to training civilians, Law Enforcement, and Military personnel for the worst case scenario.

Mindset is Mike’s passion. He believes that it’s a tangible tactic that can be taught and made more resilient with training and an open mind.

Teaching Your Kids to Defend Themselves

Teaching Your Kids to Defend Themselves

Fight, flight, or freeze. These are humans’ three reactions to danger. What tools do your kids have to defend themselves when they are threatened?

As parents, we hope our kids will never be forced into this position, but in order to protect them, we must teach them how to stick up for themselves.

Martial arts are a great way to give kids the tools they need to defend themselves. They also teach life skills like discipline, perseverance, and courage. It’s not just about fighting. It’s about empowerment—physical, mental, and emotional.

Today we have Dad Edge Alliance member Philipp Lomboy back on the show. He is a martial arts and self-defense expert and the creator of the Everyday Fighter podcast and community. He is also the father of four girls. He has instilled training as part of his daughters’ lives and has raised them to know that they have the right to set their own boundaries and demand respect.

Listen to the benefits of teaching your kids to defend themselves in this short episode!
