How to be the Go-To Guy for Your Kids

How insane is it to be a parent these days? Now, think about what your kids are going through. How can you be the go-to guy for your kids when they are struggling?

Today we have Dad Edge Alliance member and elementary school teacher Charlie Moynahan on the show. Not only is he fathering two boys, as a teacher in a poor area, he is often the only consistent person in his students’ lives.

Charlie tells us how to help kids become resilient and self-reliant. He reveals how he helps students deal with learning challenges, bullies, and adversity. He also teaches us the tools he uses to raise respectful, responsible, and loving kids.

Childhood is not for the faint of heart.

Charlie Moynahan

“If you realized your ability to shine – in the classroom, in your career, in your community – was simply a result of you focusing on productive choices, how much more impactful would you be, and for whom? This question rattles me daily as I struggle to show up and be the best dad I can be to my two young boys (ages 4 and 2). Proudly, I spend a lot of time in reflection and am on a quest to help my boys (and in turn, other people) find their shine. Over the past seven years, I have sharpened my saw as an elementary educator in Sacramento, California, working with multi-generational families to improve their outlooks and align their children’s goals towards success. My first published book, Tanzen and the Yellow Light, appeals to upper elementary/middle school grade fiction readers.”

Tanzen and the Yellow Light

Tanzen is a 5th grader at Luther Elementary School, and while he doesn’t fully understand his dreams lately, he soon realizes that his core group of buddies is having similar dreams. When Tanzen wakes one morning and sees orange and black fur on his arms, a million questions start popping into his head. Questions like, “What is happening to me?”, “Can I roar super awesomely?”, and “What’s for breakfast, again?”Tanzen soon finds out that his friends are also experiencing odd abilities that don’t quite add up. Famed school bullies, Brenda and Jeremy, are working alongside a dangerous group of Shifters that have the same abilities as Tanzen and his friends, but come together for damaging purposes. When one of Tanzen’s crew gets taken and sent to the Zanimal World, they have no choice but to pursue, at all costs. A surprise schoolhouse attack pushes the group towards a battle of good versus evil before they’ve even had a chance to train with their teacher and mentor, Mr. Cherry! Will the crew be able to band together, face increasingly complex Zanimal challenges, and save their friend… in between classroom chaos, cooties, and cafeteria food? Find out by joining Tanzen, Amaya, Leo, and Jay as they stumble, crash, slip and slide their way into… Zanimal World!

I don’t want to drive their life. I want to help them figure it out.

accountability partner

Start Reaching Your Goals with an Accountability Partner

When it comes to committing to our goals, we often let ourselves down. We’ll sleep in instead of getting that workout in. We’ll give in to that junk food or extra beer. We’ll put off our big dreams for another day. No one will know that we didn’t follow through. But if we have to answer to someone else, the whole game changes. Today we talk about how you can start reaching your goals with an accountability partner.

In this episode, you will see the accountability partner dynamic in action in the Dad Edge Alliance. Ninety-six of our members signed up for #75Hard, a 75-day challenge that develops physical and mental strength. We matched everyone up with accountability partners. modern fatherhood

Modern Fatherhood: Intentionality, Equality, and Vision

Lawrence Gordon grew up with a single mom who showed him how to be resilient, but his father was out of the picture. As he grew up, his priorities were misdirected, and his first marriage ended in divorce. As an adult, Lawrence realized that it was up to him to seek male role models and learn how to navigate the challenges of modern fatherhood.

Today, Lawrence is the happily remarried father of three. He is passionate about getting men involved in reading to their kids with children’s books that his kids help him create. He talks about the silver linings of the coronavirus pandemic when it comes to family. He also goes into how we can do our part to raise awareness about equality and give back to our communities to mentor the next generation of strong family leaders.

Lawrence Gordon

Lawrence M. Gordon II was born on March 17th in Columbia, SC, and grew up in Maple Hts in Cleveland, OH and spent his senior year in Newport News, VA graduating high school at Denbigh.

His late mom, Dacia, was a high school teacher and his late father, Morris Sr, served in the army where he retired. His older sibling Keione help him navigate through humble beginnings.

Lawrence’s passion for sharing stories with his children, family members, and the community is something he knows will help create an impact.  Lawrence knows the role of the male in children’s lives is necessary and wants to encourage men everywhere to read more to the children in their home, and communities.

Lawrence Gordon is married to Sarah Gordon.  They live in South Carolina with daughter, Lauren, Landen, and Henry who help inspire the content of his books.

  • If his children are not involved in his work, Lawrence won’t have anything to do with it.
  • Lawrence gets three nights out of the week to do what he wants. The other nights are family nights.
  • Make sure you are prepared for quality time, where you are present and energetic.
  • How the pandemic has shifted our view of what’s important
  • Sometimes through tragedy, you discover a gift inside of you, and if you give it space to grow and develop, it can change you.

dads to read to their kids

Finally, a Book Especially for Dads to Read to Their Kids

In this episode, I talk about how my son inspired me to write a a book especially for dads to read to their kids.

As men and dads, most of us are task-oriented and find it hard to put our emotions into words. We feel odd communicating and we don’t know if it will resonate with our kids. Many of us work and are gone for the majority of the day. How do we let our kids know how we feel about them and how we are there for them no matter what? Books are a great way to start the conversation, but the majority of books out there are from a mom’s perspective. That is why I wrote Daddy Will Always Love and Protect You.

Daddy Will Always Love and Protect You

Available on Amazon in Kindle and Paperback

Daddy Will Always Love and Protect You illustrates a father’s love for his kids. There are so many books on the market that illustrates the relationships between moms and kids, but very few for dads. Being a dad is one of the toughest yet rewarding jobs in the world. Most of our kids don’t clearly understand how much we love them, how much we think about them when we are not around, and how important they are to us. This book is a short, funny, and powerful read for both dads and kids.
