Saying “Yes” to your Kids’ Requests

Saying “Yes” to your Kids’ Requests

This show was recorded right after The Dad Edge Live Summit and we’re going to share a quick thought from the event that is so important to our kids.

We might not even notice it, but much of the time, when our kid asks us to do something with them, our default answer is “no.” We’re busy. Maybe later. After we get one more thing checked off our endless to-do list.

What we don’t think about is how badly our kids just want to hang out and spend time with us.

Today we talk about changing our default setting. We always have things going on, but we need to stop and think about what matters most. What would happen if next time your kid asks you to play with them or take them out, that your default answer is “yes?”

How to Stop Obsessing Over Life’s Trivial Problems

How to Stop Obsessing Over Life’s Trivial Problems

Our previous episode was called A Father’s Last words and it was something TDE has never done before. Brian Froneyberger bravely and generously gave of the perspective of a father who was dying of cancer. It was a true privilege to listen to his wisdom about what really matters to a person who knows their time is running out. Tragically, he passed away between the recording and release of the show and his funeral service was held the very day his episode came out.

Having this conversation with Brian forced things into perspective. We often get frustrated with our kids. We get irritable with our spouses. We stress about work. Most of us feel like we’re under a burden of obligations, but we have the choice to turn this around. Brian would give anything to be here having the problems we are facing right now.

It’s not what happens to us, it’s how we respond to it. We can be the calm in the middle of the storm if we don’t obsess over life’s trivial problems. When we’re feeling stressed, depressed, or hopeless, we must ask ourselves:

  • Is worrying really worthy of our precious time?
  • Wouldn’t it be better to focus our emotions on what really matters in life?
  • Shouldn’t we be giving our energy to the things that we love instead of those we hate?
The time we spend dwelling on life's trivial problems robs us of the time we have with the people who mean most to us. #life #death #gratitude #dads #men #fathers #wisdom Click To Tweet

Work-Life Balance Advice from a Kid

Work-Life Balance Advice from a Kid

Many of us are so focused on providing for our family and securing our financial future that we fail to spend enough quality time with the people that matter. Sometimes we don’t realize how much our attention means to our spouses and kids. After work, we might only get a few hours with our families. What’s the best way to spend what little time we have with them?

In this short episode, I talk to my son Ethan who gives us a kid’s perspective on just how important time with dad is. He also shares simple, straightforward advice for hardworking dads on how to achieve work-life balance and prioritize their free time with their families.

#DoEpicShit – Sharing Amazing Experiences with Your Kids

In this week’s Thursday Throwdown, I’m following up on my show Why It’s Time to Do Epic Shit TODAY. I got a great response from that episode. Listeners have been posting pictures of the epic things they are doing with their kids and tagging it with #DoEpicShit.

Sharing amazing experiences with our family doesn’t have to be complicated. Hikes, camping in the back yard, getting pedicures with daughters–we just need to step out of the normal routine and connect to make a lasting memory.

Today I talk about an epic experience I shared with my two older sons and how I marked that experience by writing them a letter about it and reading it to them.

Letter to my boys in the mountains.

What Happened When My Family Gave Up Screen Time for 40 Days

What Happened When My Family Gave Up Screen Time for 40 Days

Electronic devices are a part of our lives now. Can you imagine giving them up? Would your kids survive without their phones, tablets, and video games? Listen to what happened to my family when we gave up our screen time for 40 days!

My family is Catholic and for Lent this year, my nine-year-old decided to give up screen time. That means no Playstation, no Wii no TV, no iPad. Our whole family was so inspired by his sacrifice, we all gave up our screens and it has changed our lives in amazing ways. We don’t sit around watching TV anymore. It forces us to go outside and play basketball or football. No one is looking at their phones. We even play board games. We huddle together and read books. Now that we’ve given up our screens, we really don’t want them back.

Would you take the no screen time challenge? Let us know if you do and share your experience in the Dad’s Edge Facebook Group.
