The Disease of Busyness

Are you infected with the disease of busyness?

Many of us run on all cylinders, trying to cross the next item off our to do lists. Our days are full. We commit ourselves to the point of exhaustion. It feels like we’re accomplishing a lot, but weeks, months, years go by and we find ourselves stuck in the same place. Our health, business, and relationships are neglected. We want to move forward, but how can we possibly fit more in?

Busyness is a sneaky disease. In this episode we talk with Dad Edge Alliance member Dan Zehner, host of the Anthem of the Adventurer Podcast. Dan used busyness as a distraction to avoid doing what he needed to do in life. He was overweight, stress out, and disconnected from his family. Then he got real with himself.

Dan tells us about how he confronted his pain, discovered his purpose, and took ownership of his time. He is now living at the peak of his potential and you can too!

“We must stop using the excuse of having kids and a mortgage to hold us back from a life filled with adventure.”—Dan Zehner

Getting More Done In 12 Weeks Than Others Do In 12 Months with Brian Moran

How would you like accomplish in 12 weeks what you’d think would take you a year? The traditional habit of planning goals over a 12 month period has proven ineffective. Believe it or not, we can actually execute more in the next 12 weeks than we can in 12 months—not only in business, but also in our family lives.

We are excited to have Brian Moran on the show today. He’s the NY Times Bestselling author of The 12 Week Year: Get More Done in 12 Weeks Than Others Do in 12 Months. Brian’s going to tell us how the 12 Week Year works and how we can apply this strategy to work, health, and relationships. He also teaches us how to get our spouses and kids on board to so you can make incredible progress toward your big visions as a family.

Don’t let another year go by without having accomplished your goals. Get started on your 12 Week Year now!

The 12 Week Year: Get More Done In 12 Weeks Than Others Will In 12 Months

The guide to shortening your execution cycle down from one year to 12 weeks

Most organizations and individuals work in the context of annual goals and plans; a 12-month execution cycle. Instead, The 12 Week Year avoids the pitfalls and low productivity of annualized thinking. This book redefines your “year” to be 12 weeks long. In 12 weeks, there just isn’t enough time to get complacent, and urgency increases and intensifies. The 12 Week Year creates focus and clarity on what matters most and a sense of urgency to do it now. In the end more of the important stuff gets done and the impact on results is profound.

  • Explains how to leverage the power of a 12-week year to drive improved results in any area of your life
  • Offers a how-to book for both individuals and organizations seeking to improve their execution effectiveness
  • Authors are leading experts on execution and implementation
  • Turn your organization’s idea of a year on its head, and speed your journey to success.

The Holy Grail of Work-Life Balance with James Sudakow

Is work-life balance an unattainable myth? Most of us have tried everything to evenly distribute our time and energy across work, life, and family. Many of us may have also discovered that this is one of the most difficult things to achieve. It almost seems impossible. But it’s not.

Today’s guest is James Sudakow. He is the father of four kids and the author of Out of the Blur: A Delirious Dad’s Search for the Holy Grail of Work-Life Balance. He used to suffer from superhero syndrome, trying to be everything to everyone all the time. Eventually, he realized that he wasn’t showing up in the way that he wanted to at home or at work and came up with his own plan to analyze his behavior and change his ways.

In this episode, James Sudakow talks about the superhero syndrome and outlines the common traps we fall into when it comes to prioritizing our to do list. He gives practical solutions for breaking common habits that suck our time and energy and shows us that a sane, productive, fulfilling life is not as mysterious as we think. Behold, the holy grail of work life balance!

Drowning in Distraction? Optimize Your Morning Routine

Drowning in Distraction? Optimize Your Morning Routine

We live in a world where we are drowning in distraction. It seems that everything is fighting for our attention. This causes our minds to become over-stimulated and reactionary.

In our last show, Jim Kwik told us how to turn on our superhero brain. In this short episode, I go over the elements he suggested for a morning routine that will optimize our brain for focus and productivity.

  • Don’t check your device
  • Try to remember your dreams
  • Make your bed
  • Brush your teeth with opposite hand
  • Drink water
  • Do deep breathing exercises
  • Take a cold shower
  • Make a brain tea
  • Exercise
  • Gratitude
  • Make a brain power smoothie
  • Create a “not to do” list

Announcement: We are changing the name of the podcast in a couple weeks to the Dad Edge Podcast. There will be no change in the content or the website. You’ll just see the new show name and logo.

optimal sleep

Achieve More Through Optimal Sleep

Thanks for checking out this week’s Five Minute Thursday on Optimal Sleep.  Don’t forget to grab a copy of the Dad’s Edge Audiobook below!  Yes, it’s finally here!  After many requests, I finally have the audiobook for you guys.  Also, if you haven’t become a part of the Dad Edge FB Group, click the link below for access.

Optimal sleep is Critical to our Success, Productivity, Health, and Happiness

Think about it for a minute, how do you feel when you don’t get optimal sleep?  How do you feel the next day?  What is your productivity like?  What is your mood like?  Do your relationships suffer because you feel like total crap?  Does your professional life take a beating because you feel exhausted?  Are you keeping Red Bull, Monster, and Starbucks in business to keep your energy up?

If you are answering “YES” to any of the above questions, chances are you are not giving your body and mind the optimal sleep it needs to be your best.

Sleep and Testosterone

We have said it time and time again, but if you want to keep your body fat low, have sustained energy for the whole day, and keep your libido high then sleep is a must.  Our bodies produce the largest amount of testosterone when we are getting optimal sleep.

Get Optimal Sleep by Creating a “Sleep Sanctuary”

Optimal sleep is achieved hours before our head hits the pillow.  Make sure you have the following in check before you turn in for the night.

  • No electronics 90 minutes before bed
  • Blackout curtains
  • Get to bed before 10:30pm
  • If you use electronics right before bed, use blue blocking glasses
  • No TV in your room
  • No caffeine after 12pm (including soda, tea, or coffee)
  • Crank down that thermostat to 68 degrees or lower

Optimal Sleep Means Better Relationships

When you feel good, you will have more patience and energy for your loved ones.  Think about it, when we don’t get a good night’s rest we can be moody, irritable, and not the best person to be around.  Don’t be that guy.  Get your Z’s and show up big for the people who love you most!

Thanks for checking out this week’s Five Minute Thursday on Optimal Sleep.
