Strategies to Keep Calm Through the Chaos

4 Strategies to Keep Calm Through the Chaos

Sometimes, life throws us a curveball. We might be cruising along, meeting all our goals, right on track for the future. Our family is thriving. Life is good, then suddenly we are launched into chaos.

That is what happened to our guest today, Gene Villeneuve. Gene is a Canadian who moved with his wife and kids to work in Paris, France. They were living the dream until two years ago when his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Gene was on The Dad Edge previously to talk about how to love a spouse with cancer. He did the best he could to be a good husband and dad as his wife went through grueling treatments and surgeries. But just when his wife was recovering from her last surgery, Gene found out that his status with his job in France had changed and he would have 6 weeks to move his family back to Canada.

Gene tells us about how coped with this huge upheaval in his life and four of his personal strategies to keep calm through the chaos.

'I’ve learned that it’s not worth adding more drama into chaos. The more drama you add to an existing chaotic situation, the more drama you’ll beget.'—@genevilleneuve #dads #men #fathers #change #adversity Click To Tweet

Embracing Change as a Man

Embracing Change as a Man

Most of us are resistant to change. It can cause feelings of helplessness, anxiety, and overwhelm. As men, we automatically internalize our stress, shutting our spouses out. We’re afraid of appearing weak to those who look up to us. But, this is a destructive habit that damages our mental and physical health. It also creates a rift in the family that can lead to permanent consequences.

Today we talk to Dad Edge Alliance member Joe Rico about embracing change as a man. He tells us how a major shift in his life almost brought him to his knees and where he discovered sources of strength to empower himself in the face of uncertainty.

Essentialism Greg McKeown

Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less with Greg McKeown

Do you ever feel the urge to declutter your life? Have you ever found yourself stretched too thin? Do you sometimes feel overworked and underutilized? Are you frequently busy without getting any closer to your goals?

Most of us in this day and age feel perpetually busy and overwhelmed with little energy and time to spend on the things in life that matter the most to us.

Today we have a very special guest, Greg McKeown, the NY Times bestselling author of Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less. He shares astonishing insights on how family life has changed throughout the centuries, how our behavioral systems impact future generations, and how to design our lives to focus on essentials so we can stay connected with our long-term visions. You’ll want to save this epic episode!

'You’re not going to get everything done. You can get the right things done and feel like you did what really matters.' – @GregoryMcKeown #essentialism #busyness #overwhelm #dreams #goals #family #parenting Click To Tweet

Greg McKeown

Greg McKeown is married with four children, but to him the word ‘family’ includes parents, in-laws, siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Greg says only recently has the meaning of family shifted from the extended intergenerational family to today’s idea of the nuclear family. Growing up as one of six children, it’s important for Greg to think of himself as part of this larger familial structure.

Greg’s driving force to write Essentialism was when he realized how pathetically short life is. The older we get, the more quickly it seems to fly by. We are constantly busy and distracted. He cites the stoic philosopher Seneca, who wrote about the dangers of busyness 2,000 years ago. Our culture values an existence where we feel like we have to do everything. Our lives are crammed, pushing out the few vital things that will mean the most to us at the end of our lives.

Jim Kwik

Jim Kwik suffered and accident that left him with brain damage at age five. He couldn’t focus in school and didn’t understand what was being taught. Teachers had to repeat themselves over and over again until he was so ashamed he had to pretend he was learning. He remembers very clearly overhearing his teacher say to another adult, “that’s the boy with the broken brain.”

But Jim didn’t give up.He had difficulty learning to read, but he was inspired by comic books and the concept that one person could make a difference. Like the super heroes in his favorite stories, he was determined to triumph over his adversity. He devoted himself to solving the riddle of how his brain worked and used his experiences to create strategies to dramatically enhance his mental performance.

He has since dedicated his life to helping others unleash their true genius and brainpower to learn anything faster and live a life of greater power, productivity, and purpose.

If there is one skill to master in the 21st century it's your ability to learn faster. – @JimKwik #technology #performance #brain #productivity Click To Tweet

How to Eliminate Negative Emotions by Targeting False Thoughts

Our thoughts and emotions can tear us down if we don’t know how to manage them. When waves of stress repeatedly hit us, our emotions can override our brains and take over our behavior, leading us to perform badly and make poor decisions. We may experience overwhelm or feel like our life is spinning out of control.

In this quick episode, I discuss the difference between an emotion and a thought, and how we can use the dynamic between emotions and thoughts to eliminate unnecessary stress, depression, anger, and overwhelm.
