lone wolf syndrome

The Cure for Lone Wolf Syndrome

On Thursday Throwdown, we interview everyday dads. Today, alliance member John Williams is on the show. John used to suffer from lone wolf syndrome. He shouldered his burdens alone and kept his worries to himself. Even though he arrived at a good place in life, something was missing. He knew that a man is the sum of the people closest to him and that he was capable of more. This sparked the search for a tribe to surround himself with.

A rising tide lifts all ships, and by doing life with good men, John has stopped drifting and is now actively shaping his destiny. His wife Ashly also makes a surprise appearance and gives us the lowdown on the changes she has seen in John since he’s had men to share the highs and lows with.

'Nothing worth doing is easy. You don’t stumble into success in your marriage. You don’t accidentally become a good father. All these things take intentionality.'—John Williams, Dad Edge Alliance #dads #men #fathers #fatherhood… Click To Tweet

isolation among men

It’s Time to End the Social Isolation Epidemic Among Men

Most of us men live isolated lives because we feel it’s noble, selfless, and the right thing to do. We pay most of our attention to two things – our family and our jobs. When it comes to relationships with other men, we don’t have them. In this week’s Thursday Throwdown, I talk about why it’s time to end this social isolation epidemic among men.

When was the last time you made friends with a likeminded man? Have you developed a relationship where you could feel safe to call and lean in for help or advice?

99% of the guys I talk to have not made any true connections in a long time. We have a lot of acquaintances, but no close friends. This is unhealthy, because humans are community beings. We die a little bit inside when we don’t belong to a social group. We try to solve the problems of the world alone.

When we’re bottled up without a tribe to turn to for guidance and support, we live life overwhelmed, low on patience, irritated, and pissed at ourselves that we’re living life stressed-out and unhappy. It’s not supposed to be that way, and it doesn’t have to be.

Social isolation is bad for our health and well being. If you’re feeling alone with no one to turn to, find support at a local level. It could be through your church, or a local organization like the Freemasons or the Knights of Columbus. If you’re having trouble finding likeminded men in your community, reach out online.

For example, we have the free Dad’s Edge Alliance Facebook Group, and we also have the Dad’s Edge Alliance Membership Group. There are hundreds of similar groups online now. Find the one that resonates with your values and goals and join in. There is no need to deal with all the challenges of life, work, and family alone.
