staring down the wolf leadership

Staring Down the Wolf with ex-Navy SEAL Mark Divine

Each day, we have a choice to do things the way we’ve always done them, or to stare down the wolf of fear until he backs off.

Even if we’re not a former Navy SEAL Commander like today’s guest, as fathers, we are the heads of our families. We need to learn how to operate like an elite leader for them, and more importantly, ourselves.

This means we need to be strong enough to face our insecurities, confront our shadows, admit where we’re wrong, adopt a learning mindset, and be willing to ask help.

We are truly honored to have ex-Navy SEAL, Mark Divine, on the show for his fourth time. Among his many accomplishments, he is the creator of SEALFIT and the author of Unbeatable Mind. His new book is Staring Down the Wolf: 7 Leadership Commitments That Forge Elite Teams.

Today Mark talks about how becoming an elite leader starts with a deep understanding of who we are and why we behave the way we do. He reveals that elite leadership is not about pretending we’re perfect and indestructible. It’s about being honest about our weaknesses and failures.

Mark also teaches us how to get a team to commit to one cause and align communication on an intuitive level so that we can better our lives as well as generate a positive change in the world.

Mark Divine

Mark Divine is an expert in elite performance, mental toughness, and leader-team development. His renowned SEALFIT and Unbeatable Mind training programs have transformed tens of thousands from all walks of life.

Mark’s own leadership skills were initially honed in the SEALs, where he was the honor man of his BUDS class while leading his entire boat crew to success — which has never been repeated in BUDS history. He later built several successful operations, two of which have scaled into 8-figure businesses. His mission now is to lead 100 million to the path of integrated development through his motivational speaking, Unbeatable Mind podcasts and books, by 2045. The SEAL students he teaches make it through training with a 90% success rate, and the breathing, visualization and concentration practices he has taught are now standard at BUDS and in Air Force Special Ops training. Mark helps others to motivate in order to achieve maximum levels of success, mentally and physically.

Mark addresses integration and training of the whole body-mind-spirit system in his approach which he calls the Five Mountains. He teaches this unique philosophy to executives, corporate and elite sports teams and entrepreneurs through motivational speeches. His keynotes and training have all been rated five stars or “best ever” – with topics he draws from his best selling books including The Way of the SEAL, Unbeatable Mind and Staring Down the Wolf.

Staring Down the Wolf

What does it take to command a team of elite individuals? It requires a commitment to seven key principles: Courage, Trust, Respect, Growth, Excellence, Resiliency, and Alignment. All of these are present in an elite team which commits to them deeply in order to forge the character worthy of uncommon success.

Retired Navy SEAL Commander, entrepreneur and New York Times best-selling author Mark Divine (founder of SEALFIT, NavySeal.com, and Unbeatable Mind) reveals what makes the culture of an elite team, and how to get your own team to commit to serve at an elite level. Using principles he learned on the battlefield, training SEALs, and in his own entrepreneurial and growth company ventures, Mark knows what it is to lead elite teams, and how easily the team can fail by breaching these commitments.

Elite teams challenge themselves to step up everyday to do the uncommon. Developing the principles yourself and aligning your team around these commitments will allow you to thrive in VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity) environments, no matter your background or leadership experience. Drawing from his 20 years leading SEALs, and 25 years of success and failure in entrepreneurship and 10 years coaching corporate clients, Mark Divine shares a very unique perspective that will allow you to unlock the tremendous power of your team.

What You’ll Learn

navy seal tactics for parents

Navy SEAL Tactics for Parents with Chris Sajnog

Retired Navy SEAL, Chris Sajnog, is one of our most popular guests. He is the premier firearms instructor in America, a bestselling author, and the host of the SEAL Training Podcast.

The Dad Edge went to his studio in San Diego for a live, in-person discussion about fatherhood, and we really went deep. Chris was abandoned by his father and carries the wound with him to this day. He vowed not to be like his estranged dad and gave up his accomplished military life to be there for his teenage boys.

Sadly, his sons don’t want to spend time with him. Chris opens up about dealing with the painful lack of connection with his sons, and how he maintains his fatherly presence in their lives.

Chris Sajnog also shares Navy SEAL tactics for parents to help us to learn anything quickly and effectively. He goes over the hard and soft traits we need to cultivate to be balanced men, and how we can apply the warrior mindset to everyday life.

free your potential

Master the Key: How to Free Your Potential with Mike Flynn

Everyone is talking about finding your “why” or your purpose in life. The idea is that once you know your why, everything else falls into place. But what if you don’t know your why or how to find it? What do you do when you realize you are trapped in a story that you would have never written for yourself? How do you become who you were created to be?

Today we have Mike Flynn back on the show. He is the host of the Impact Entrepreneur podcast and has just released his new book, Master the Key: A Story to Free Your Potential, Find Meaning and Live Life on Purpose.

Mike is going to teach us the 4 elements of ownership, why me must learn to sit in silence with ourselves, and how to find our why. He also reveals the most important key to stepping into our destiny—to believe we are worthy of it.

Mike Flynn

Mike Flynn has been advising individuals, as well as executives of companies large and small since 2005. And beginning in 2009, he felt called to do something more, something even greater. Mike commenced that journey in 2015 when he launched a podcast called The Impact Entrepreneur Show. Since then, he has had nearly 200 one-on-one conversations with some of the worlds most elite athletes, thinkers and entrepreneurs in an effort to discover how they are using their personal stories to have a game changing impact in the lives of others.

Master the Key

Master the Key is unlike any personal development book you’ve ever read. Mike illustrates the human quest to find meaning in life through a fictional story that leads readers to the truth.

His main character, Steve, suffers a financial downfall that leads him to a personal crisis. Through a series of conversations with a few wise people, he learns why his life is all wrong.

These factors have prevented him from a meaningful life:

  • Unconsciously allowing a circumstance or someone else’s story direct one’s self-narrative
  • Chaining one’s gifts to the pursuit of status and achievement
  • Allowing a comfort or fear to replace action
  • Misunderstanding the power of community

What You’ll Learn

  • How Mike Flynn’s fictional story helps people tap into and free their potential in a way they never expected or experienced before
  • Why simply knowing our “why” is not enough for us to be successful when pursuing our purpose in life
  • What we have to do before we find our why, which is to believe we are worthy of one
  • How to overcome the negative thoughts you are feeding yourself mentally
  • Why owning your worth and gifts is not egotistical but is actually the best way you can help others
  • How to analyze adversity in a way that it ferments into a fine wine that serves you
  • How to master your narrative and make your own story
  • How we oftentimes believe that if we don’t have the perceived outward success the world has prescribed for us, then we think we’re not worthy of it
  • How the only way to get what we’re worthy of is to be courageous and do something uncomfortable while focusing on a vision that things can be different
  • How to get out of your own way by sitting in silence with yourself
  • The importance of reflecting on the negative events and experiences of the past
  • How to overcome the belief that you are not good enough
  • Why silence scares us so much
  • Developing time tolerance
  • The number one thing a man wants from his spouse—her belief in him
  • How our gifts are often chained to the pursuit of status and achievement
  • How we show up in the world is usually how someone else expects us to show up in the world
  • The first step to Mastering the Key
  • How to own your story
  • How to own your gifts
  • The transformation that occurs when you shed others’ expectations
  • Unchaining your gifts so that you are free to rebuild yourself in your own way
  • When you’re not being intentional about your life, you use your gifts for the wrong purpose. That is why it doesn’t feel fulfilling.
  • The willingness to practice and hone
  • Owning action and owning your community
  • How we set ourselves up for compounding failure when we don’t know our worth
  • Why it may be dangerous to quit a job to pursue a passion
  • What to do before considering taking this leap

journey inward

A Father’s Journey Inward

On Thursdays we like to interview every day dads. Today we talk to Dad Edge Alliance member, Ben. His mission was to become the best father he could be to his 6 year old son and a 4 year old daughter. He knew that they were picking up on what he did, not what he said, but sometimes he had a hard time being calm. After struggling with anxiety most of his life, he realized he needed to find a way to stay patient, especially when the kids were crying and things were stressful with work.

Ben had to go inward to face his flaws, to confront the truth about who he was and who he wanted to be. This unlocked the journey to living his life according to his values, to staying calm through the storm by accepting others as they are and letting go of the need to control.

The less pressure you exert, the more influence you have. Accept others and don’t control.
