Change Your Brain, Change Your Life with Dr. Daniel Amen

We obsess over nutrition and fitness for a strong physique, but we ignore the most important organ in the body—the brain. The brain manages every function of the human body and is also in charge of our focus, mood, and ability to learn.

In this episode of The Dad Edge, America’s Most Popular Psychiatrist, Dr. Daniel Amen, talks about how we can improve the lives of ourselves and our children by making the brain a priority. He tells us how to eat to optimize brain power, how to create a bedtime routine for the best sleep, and how to stop the negative thoughts and behaviors that sabotage our progress in life.

This show will transform the way you think, literally. Prepare to Change Your Brain, Change Your Life!

Get the brain right and your mind will follow.–Dr. Daniel Amen

resilience parenting

Resilience Parenting with Chris Santillo

How can we teach our kids to navigate hardships and adversity while also raising them to be well-behaved? Today’s guest is Chris Santillo, the author of Resilience Parenting: Raising Resilient Children in an Era of Detachment and Dependence.

Chris is a black belt instructor of Kempo karate and has established a foundation of three pillars in parenting—learning, service, and integrity. You will find out what snowplow parenting is and why it’s so damaging. You’ll also learn why you should formulate a family creed, how to teach ownership and independence, and how to give kids space to overcome challenges to become constant learners in life.

If you don’t intentionally communicate your values to your children, then they’re either going to end up with no values or someone else is going to shove their values onto your kids.—Chris Santillo

Chris Santillo

Chris Santillo is founder and head instructor at Potomac Kempo, a martial arts studio with four locations in Alexandria, Virginia. Holly is his co-author and the founding conductor of Mount Vernon Children’s Choir and a Senior Instructor at Potomac Kempo. Together, they have been working with and educating children for more than thirty-five years. Chris has a degree in computer science from Harvey Mudd College and an MBA from Georgetown University; Holly has a degree in anthropology from Willamette University. As of the date of publication they are nomadic, exploring the world and worldschooling their three sons.

Anything they figure out by themselves sticks a little bit better than anything I can say.—Chris Santillo

Resilience Parenting

Your children will face many challenges in the years ahead, so you want to raise them to be resilient—strong, adaptable, and able to recover. It is your mission to empower your son or daughter to cultivate a functional and fulfilling life. This essential handbook will help you achieve that goal.

In Resilience Parenting, martial arts instructors Chris and Holly Santillo share the insights they have gained as teachers and parents. They offer positive alternatives to lecturing, bribing, and punishing; focusing instead on three Pillars: Learning, Integrity, and Service. By applying these powerful principles, you can inspire your children to develop the independence they need to succeed as adults, while renewing their connection to family and community.

Whether you are raising a teenager or just starting your family, the methods prescribed in this book will help you unlock your greatest potential as a parent.

The world is a better experience with children.—Chris Santillo

What You’ll Learn

  • What snowplow parenting is and why it leaves kids dangerously unprepared when they go out into the world
  • How we need to give kids opportunities to grow and develop and not do everything for them
  • Letting kids learn to take care of themselves
  • How to raise responsible kids who follow directions
  • Letting go of the constant need to look perfect in front of your kids

  • Creating a family creed to reiterate on a daily basis, and making sure behavior is consistent with the creed

    • Integrity to self–if you don’t have integrity with yourself, you won’t have it anywhere in your life. You must follow through with the promises you make to yourself.
    • Integrity to others–if you promise something, you must keep your word.
    • Service–Building connections with other people and performing a service for them to have a fulfilling life.
    • Staying connected to other people while preserving independence
  • As dads, when we don’t have the perfect answer to a question, we blow it off or diminish it instead of admitting we don’t know and exploring it together with our child

  • Learning to develop strength to approach problems better, then adapting to adversity and setbacks
  • Recovery–knowing that when everything goes wrong and you’re broken down, you possess the confidence that you’ll get back up again

  • How to help kids be better at failure
  • Pulling lessons out of books and real life to show our kids
  • The importance of repeating these lessons
  • If kids are not participating in the family chores, you become their servant
  • How to address kids who do not obey
  • Setting rules–reasonable, unambiguous, consistent, and age appropriate
  • How to undo bad parenting habits with kids
  • Chris’s proudest moment in his martial arts career
  • What we all want to know—who would win a sparring match between Chris and his wife?

Tapping into Integrity

Tapping into Integrity and Curiosity for a Richer Life

Integrity means being a whole person and making sure that our words, actions, and vision are all on the same trajectory toward a meaningful life. As we get older, we tend to lose the innate integrity and curiosity that we were born with. We forget about the dreams that inspired us. We often fall completely out of alignment with that spark in our lives.

Thursday Throwdowns are our short episodes about the everyday dad who is doing heroic things to optimize his life. Today we have one of our Dad Edge Alliance members on to talk about tapping into integrity and curiosity. You will walk away from this show knowing exactly what it means to be whole and how to stay true to yourself through life’s ups and downs.

Turn On Your Superhero Brain with Jim Kwik

Turn On Your Superhero Brain with Jim Kwik

In this modern age, we are bombarded with information and distractions. Our brain is not prepared to handle the constant interruptions from our computers and mobile devices. Do you feel overwhelmed and distracted? Are you agitated and anxious? Then you will get a ton of value from our guest today.

Jim Kwik is the founder of Kwik Learning and is a specialist in speed reading, memory improvement, brain performance, and accelerated learning. He is an advisor to many of the worlds’ CEOs, entrepreneurs, and celebrities. He is also  the host of Kwik Brain podcast, the #1 training show on iTunes, and is the creator of online courses that are used around the world.

Jim Kwik tells us his story from being learning-challenged due to a brain injury to being one of the most sought after learning coaches in the world. He also shares with us how to avoid mental exhaustion and his 10-step morning routine to create optimum brain power!

Today, you’re not paid for your brute strength, but your brain strength. It’s not your muscle power, it’s your mind power. The faster you can learn the faster you can earn. – @JimKwik #learning #success #brain Click To Tweet

Jim Kwik

Jim Kwik suffered and accident that left him with brain damage at age five. He couldn’t focus in school and didn’t understand what was being taught. Teachers had to repeat themselves over and over again until he was so ashamed he had to pretend he was learning. He remembers very clearly overhearing his teacher say to another adult, “that’s the boy with the broken brain.”

But Jim didn’t give up.He had difficulty learning to read, but he was inspired by comic books and the concept that one person could make a difference. Like the super heroes in his favorite stories, he was determined to triumph over his adversity. He devoted himself to solving the riddle of how his brain worked and used his experiences to create strategies to dramatically enhance his mental performance.

He has since dedicated his life to helping others unleash their true genius and brainpower to learn anything faster and live a life of greater power, productivity, and purpose.

If there is one skill to master in the 21st century it's your ability to learn faster. – @JimKwik #technology #performance #brain #productivity Click To Tweet
