Toolkit for an Extraordinary Marriage with Larry Hagner

How many hours have you spent training to be a husband? We expect marriage to work out without ever learning the skills to maintain a successful relationship. We want more sex and intimacy as well as better communication and connection, but we are missing the tactics.

Today I am with Nate Bagley from the Growth Marriage podcast to talk about elevating your marriage. We go over the tools you need to take the relationship with your wife to the next level.

“Marriage is a skill. Communication is a skill. Connection is a skill.”

What You’ll Learn

Extraordinary Marriage

[4:28]

The four elements to a legendary marriage are taking care of yourself, the friendship, the partnership, and the lovers’ aspect.

[5:03]

The foundation that those elements sit on is communication. The most important thing is creating an environment of psychological safety, tactical empathy, emotional validation, active listening—all these things that we don’t know how to do.

Larry’s Mission

[7:13]

Growing up in a fatherless environment most of his life, Larry had a wake-up call and realized he didn’t have a reference for how to be the dad he wanted to be.

[7:30]

Larry is on a mission to ensure that dads have all the tools and resources they need to be the absolute best husbands and fathers that they can be.

The Dad Edge

[17:46]

Struggling in marriage for the first part, he figured he needs to learn patience, anger resolution, emotional resilience, and communication within marriage.

Life’s Lessons

[18:55]

Larry shared that the Dad Edge Project encompasses five elements of being a husband, father, and man. One of those is mastering personal and family finances because 50% of divorces that happen are due to financial distress that causes a lot of stress to people. The second element is optimizing physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Creating an extraordinary marriage is the third element. The fourth is an epic connection with your kids with psychological safety. The last element is being a leader.

[19:42]

According to him, there are skills to learn, master, and practice that are going to help you optimize those elements.

[21:06]

Skill are not feelings. If he feels like losing his patience, he can use the skill to create space between response and reaction or reaction and response. He learned to put all these into practice.

Daily Basis to be in Peak Condition

[29:19]

Larry shared that when he’s the healthiest, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically, he can serve his wife profoundly.

[30:10]

He added that his wife’s three biggest needs are to be seen, heard, and cherished. Attention is important in the relationship, so his wife can feel she is important.

[30:47]

He shared that his job in the relationship is not to fix his wife’s problems, but to validate, support, and create space for her.

[32:11]

Larry said that they a routine in his family because they want to make sure everyone gets ample attention.

Appreciative Inquiry

[37:37]

Larry discussed that appreciative inquiry is a way of taking teams, culture, relationships, and focusing on the best of what was, the best of what is, and what the best of what could be.

[41:17]

It’s about creating epic connection through psychological safety, communication, physical touch, words of affirmation, date nights, and asking future generative questions that elevates the entire relationship and fixes communication problems.

[44:49]

Larry added that most people will approach and interact with agenda and expectation. It’s important to approach any interaction with appreciation and curiosity.

[45:40]

He shared that when there’s wrongdoing in the family, especially with his kids, he doesn’t punish them. He would celebrate their courageous behavior but letting them know that there will be a conversation and natural consequences. This creates an important environment for relationships. Psychological safety is about knowing that they can come to you without feeling guilty or shameful.

DAD EDGE ALLIANCE - Unlock the Secrets to Living an Epic Life

The Dad Edge Alliance – Unlock the Secrets to Living an Epic Life

In the last episode of GDP, we had ultra-successful businessman and life coach Aaron Walker. He explained that he owed 100% of his success to his tribe and the people he surrounded himself with. In this week’s Thursday Throwdown, I will tell you how you can make sure you surround yourself with the right people to become the best husband, father, and man you can be.

It’s seems the older we get, the more closed off we become. Why is that?

I posted this question on the Dad Edge private Facebook group and got tons of answers. It’s harder to make new friends as an adult. Priorities change when we have families, and we feel guilty for taking time away from our spouse and kids to spend time with friends and mentors. We might not want to make ourselves seem vulnerable by asking for advice or help. Even when we become successful, we might feel we can’t relate to anyone anymore. Some of us experience such great failures, we’re embarrassed to talk about them.

Even the guys who are involved with sports and church activities still feel like something is missing.

That is why we have built this tribe where we can talk about anything in an ego-free, judgement-free, arrogance-free environment. This is an brotherhood of likeminded men––those who want to teach and those who want to learn; those who want to inspire and those who want to be inspired. We discuss real things that will make us better, more powerful, and more efficient men so that we can live our lives at full throttle. We can live life together and on purpose.

Welcome to the Dad Edge Alliance, where the elite and the hungry want to interact.

As a Member of the Dad Edge Alliance you will have exclusive access to:

1. Weekly live video community talks on Zoom.

2. Monthly elite guest speakers like:

  • Nell Gibbon Daly – sex, intimacy, communication
  • Todd Stottlemyre, MLB starting pitcher – relentless success
  • Jeff Bouwman – debt elimination and financial planning
  • Navy SEALs – elite mindset training
  • former Pro-football players, fitness coaches, life coaches and more!

3. A library of recorded video conferences.

4. Access to the Dad’s Edge Alliance private Facebook community, free books, and other resources.

If you’re hungry to live life differently, this is the place to be.

Charlie Brenneman

Charlie Brenneman: How to Live a Life of Excellence

Charlie Brenneman is a professional mixed martial arts fighter, speaker, mentor and author. Following a successful high school wrestling career, Charlie took his talents to Lock Haven University where he achieved a top 12 finish at Division I Nationals and 1st Team All-Academic. After teaching Spanish for three years and winning Spike TV’s Pros vs. Joes, Charlie decided to leave his job to pursue a master’s degree and begin his professional fighting career—“The Spaniard” was born. In 2011, he was ranked as high as #7 in the world, and in 2015, he published his autobiography, Driven: My Unlikely Journey from Classroom to Cage. Charlie currently lives in PA with his wife and daughter

“I would rather be 7th best in the world and have a well-balanced life, than the best in the world and not have that balance.”

-Charlie Brenneman TWEET THAT

“When I pass away, I want my last breath to be from exhaustion from living life to the fullest.”

-Charlie Brenneman TWEET THAT

Charlie Brenneman’s Background

That’s a heavy statement coming from a pro MMA fighter. But knowing Charlie’s background sheds some light on this quote’s reasoning. Growing up, Charlie Brenneman was fortunate to have a supportive family; a mother and father who encouraged him to achieve his goals, and sacrificed their own needs for their children. This upbringing allowed him to be successful in his academic life, his own family life and his career in the MMA.

Charlie Brenneman on Youth Sports

This isn’t to say you shouldn’t try to be the best simply that you should strive for your own excellence and encourage that in your kids. This is especially true when it comes to kids and sports. Charlie applauds his own parents for making sports fun for him and credits this attitude with much of his athletic success. He states that there needs to be a proper amount of push and encouragement. In other words, throwing your kids to the toughest opposition doesn’t necessarily ingrain positive self-image. It may actually work against them and make kids feel defeated. Instead, help kids to have “little successes”; competing against like-ability opponents and work up the ladder as they improve in their ability. Allowing kids to have fun with sports and achieve gradual success will more than likely make them want to play and instill positive behaviors.

Teach Balance and Live Balance

Teaching children the value of balancing being the best in something with other important aspects of their life, like friends and family, gives them a strong foundation for success as adults. Let’s face it: the balancing act of life only gets more challenging. Whether you’re a pro MMA fighter or a fire-fighter, learning to develop and maintain a healthy work-life balance is critical. Charlie works to achieve this through his “Systematic Living”-a curriculum for life.

Positive Habits and Surround Yourself with the Right People

Developed from his own reflection on his past successes, Charlie created this curriculum to help others become successful in their own lives. Essentially, he “deconstructed” how he achieved each individual success and identified certain pillars: honing your positive habits, surrounding yourself with the best people, networking and avoiding negativity (Check out his links to find out more!). These pillars set you up for the greatest individual success in your own life.

Family is the First Priority

Of course, one common thread throughout the entire interview with Charlie is the importance of family. It is clear that he believes in dedicating himself to something greater than himself. In other words, keeping the needs and desires of those he loves at the forefront of his personal aspirations. By being the best version of yourself, you are providing the best example for those around you.
