Alex Van Houten and Defining Dadbod

Alex Van Houten was on track to become an orthopedic surgeon, but he noticed both the patients and doctors didn’t like the business. That was when he veered toward the prevention side of health and became a personal trainer. In his work, Alex often dealt with menopausal women and became interested in hormones and how they affect energy levels, body composition, and libido.

The changes women go through are complex, but men also go through distinct changes. When Alex became a dad he experienced himself what the male body goes through. He looked into it and discovered that there are scientific reasons for the infamous ‘dadbod,’ but men’s challenges with hormones don’t get the same attention as women’s.

Why do many of us fathers neglect our health? There are two main reasons. The number one reason is guilt. We feel bad for taking time away from work and family to spend on ourselves. The second reason is money. We would have to spend more to eat healthier, join a gym, or hire a personal trainer.

But not making our health a priority is the biggest disservice to ourselves and our families.

The Dangers of Internalizing Stress


Stress causes 90% of the health issues that are killing us today. Every thought or emotion we have releases chemicals into the environment in which our cells grow. This causes inflammation, disease, and bad habits that are damaging mentally and physically.

In this 100th episode of Thursday Throwdown, Dr. Ryan Wohlfert talks about how internalizing feelings and emotions leads to a build up of stress, and how we as men and fathers can boost our health and achieve sustainable success by surrounding ourselves with likeminded men and sharing our challenges with them.

Why do most men internalize? We may not even be conscious of it, but many of us have the belief that we’re not worthy to be happy and successful. Josiah Novak

Josiah Novak has been a guest on The Good Project several times. Josiah came from four generations of divorce and abuse. As an adult, he went through a tough time with weight gain and depression. At one point, he was even suicidal. Josiah used fitness to get through living in a dark place.

Josiah didn’t have a father to look up to and it’s his mission is to change the legacy that he comes from and help other people do the same by establishing a foundation of health.
