How Dads Can Set a Powerful Example for Their Kids

How Dads Can Set a Powerful Example for Their Kids

Showing has much more impact than telling. When we show our kids how we live according to our values, they see integrity in action. They know we walk the talk.

Today’s guest, Chris, is an everyday dad and one of our new members in The Dad Edge Alliance. He talks about the importance of being aware of how closely our kids are watching us and the messages we are sending them with our behavior. He also gives us his simple yet brilliant ideas on how dads can set a powerful example for their kids in small ways every day.

We’re all dads for the first time.

What You’ll Learn

  • From the moment your kids are watching you, you’re teaching them.
  • What life lessons do you want to teach your kids?
  • How to instill work ethic
  • Showing your sons how to treat women
  • Examples of how to actively and intentionally set a powerful example for your kids. E.g. Make sure that when your kids wake up in the morning, they see you exercising, reading a book, or some other constructive habit.
  • Fathering according to personality
  • How to try to make sure kids don’t pick up on your bad habits
  • The importance if realizing you’re not alone as a father

Nothing will humble you more than trying to be a father.

Showing Leadership to Your Kids by Going First

Showing Leadership to Your Kids by Going First

Are you afraid to go first? We usually like to sit back and watch someone else go first, whether it’s being the first to raise our hand, the first to try something we’ve never done before, or the first to speak up and say what everyone else is afraid to say. But when we become dads, what happens if we continue to let others go first? What does that show our kids?

One of the lessons we want to teach our kids is leadership. We are the leaders of the family and it is our duty to go first, even if we fail. Today we have Kyle Ferris on the show. He’s one of our members from the Dad Edge Alliance and he attended our Dad Edge Summit last month. He shares his insights on how to be a leader to your kids by going first.

You are the star in your own movie and your kids are the audience. What role are you playing? Are you in a supporting role? The crew? Or the hero? #dads #men #fathers #parenting #leadership Click To Tweet

Show Your Kids What it Means to Be a Leader

4 Ways to Show Your Kids What It Means to Be a Leader

We talked about how fatherhood is leadership in the last episode of GDP. We also want to instill these leadership skills in our children. Telling them how to be leaders is not nearly as effective as leading by example. Today we’re going to outline four ways to show your kids what it means to be a leader.

  1. Kids will learn how or treat other people through what they see from us. We need to be mindful of how we interact with others every day.
  2. A leader will never oppress, suppress, or depress the potential talents in a child’s life. Never tell them their dreams are out of their reach.
  3. Create an environment for growth where they can make mistakes and they’ll be okay. Disappointments and failures are a part of life, and learning to use them as tools to grow will develop resiliency.
  4. Lead through vulnerability. Sometimes we don’t have all the skills and we need to show our kids that’s okay. When we don’t have all the answers, we are willing to learn.

The Power of Leading Your Kids By Example with Devon Bandison – GDP026

Episode Overview:

“Leadership isn’t about your title…leadership is about your influence.” – John Maxwell

Our kids will get their first life lessons on leadership through their fathers.  In this episode, we interview Devon Bandison, founder of “Fatherhood is Leadership.”  This episode is truly remarkable because Devon shares so many pearls of wisdom of how you can lead your kids by example.

About Devon Bandison

Devon Bandison was born and raised in NYC and shares the same energetic heartbeat, big personality, and commitment to excellence as his hometown. Devon is a high performance coach, speaker and author who has spoken all around the world to clients that include Fortune 100 companies, professional sports teams and business owners. He is a recognized authority and thought leader in fatherhood; teaching leadership through personal transformation. Devon’s recent TEDx Talk “Fatherhood is Leadership” has gained national recognition and was featured at TEDx Boca Raton in March 2015. He is also the host of a top rated podcast on iTunes. Devon earned his Master of Public Administration and holds a B.A. in Psychology. His keynotes and seminars connect real life experiences to the power of transformation. Devon shows participants how they can transform their own challenges into a legacy of leadership, meaning, and purpose. Devon is a loving father of three wonderful children (ages 17, 13, and 5) who inspire him daily to create a legacy of greatness.

Key Takeaways:

  • Discover how fatherhood is leadership

  • Learn ways to lead your kids in a positive way through elite leadership skills

  • How can we dads lead their kids by example?

Leading your kids through your example

Devon shares how we can raise our kids with a “leadership mentality.”

1.        Create a vision – discover your own personal vision of what successful fatherhood looks like for you.  What do you value?  What characteristics do you want to instill in your kids?

2.        What is your strategy?  At the end of every success, there was a successful strategy.  At the end of every success, there was a well executed plan of action.  As fathers, we have to have a strategy.  We have to have a plan of action in order to succeed.

3.        Having big presence – Kids really don’t care about what we buy them, how much money we have, or what we do for a living.  Kids truly care about how we show up and our purposeful presence.

4.        Forget perfection – there is no need to be perfect to inspire your kids.  Lead your kids by inspiring them to handle their own imperfections.  Our kids will always learn by example, so let’s strive to manage our imperfections and our shortcomings openly and without shame.

5.        “Does your audio match your video?”  Devon shared this quote during our show and it was truly an enlightening moment.   Our kids truly learn by example.  So, are you truly practicing what you preaching?  Our kids will learn more from our actions versus our words.

How to teach our kids about leadership?

1.        Good leaders know how to be honest – leading your kids means teaching them about honesty.  Honesty is an empowering quality of any great leader.

2.        Ability to be positive in a chaotic situation –  One of the best ways to teach our kids leadership is teaching them how to handle their own stress.  A rare and empowering quality for any great leader is being able to stay calm in a stressful situation.

3.        Achieve Abundance by Serving Others – Life is a lot bigger than just ourselves.  Great leaders find abundance in helping and serving others.  Teaching our kids to serve and help others is critical.
