Change Your Brain, Change Your Life with Dr. Daniel Amen

We obsess over nutrition and fitness for a strong physique, but we ignore the most important organ in the body—the brain. The brain manages every function of the human body and is also in charge of our focus, mood, and ability to learn.

In this episode of The Dad Edge, America’s Most Popular Psychiatrist, Dr. Daniel Amen, talks about how we can improve the lives of ourselves and our children by making the brain a priority. He tells us how to eat to optimize brain power, how to create a bedtime routine for the best sleep, and how to stop the negative thoughts and behaviors that sabotage our progress in life.

This show will transform the way you think, literally. Prepare to Change Your Brain, Change Your Life!

How do we take the first step in reclaiming ourselves when we’re navigating dark times? How do we harness the courage to move forward when it seems that there is absolutely no way out?

No one is safe from adversity. It could be a mental, physical, or spiritual crisis. We might have to cope with a failed business, a devastating loss, or a destroyed relationship.

Today we have Chad Robichaux back on The Dad Edge Podcast. We had such a powerful response to his first show with us, that we invited him to The Dad Edge Mastermind for a live Q&A session with our members.

Chad talks about triumphing through dark times. He shows us that no matter how hopeless and depressed we feel, there is always a way out with the right mindset, tools, and support.

The Seven Longest Yards with Chris Norton

What kind adversity are you facing in your life and how are you dealing with it?

Chris Norton is the bestselling author of The Seven Longest Yards, a book he wrote with his wife Emily about their journey through extreme adversity. In 2010, Chris was an enthusiastic college athlete with an exciting future ahead of him. Then, in the third quarter of an ordinary football game, he collided with a players’ knee and fractured his C3 and C4 vertebrae. This injury left him paralyzed with a 3% chance of ever regaining any movement from the neck down.

Life as he knew it was over.

Chris Norton talks about how he fought his way from feeling hopeless and helpless to becoming unstoppable. He also tells us how to stretch our identities beyond who we think we are, how to persevere through the darkest moments, and how life’s catastrophes can become its greatest gifts.

Get ready for an arsenal of tools to help you turn adversity into a driving force!

'Life’s lowest moments can be the source of our greatest gifts.'—Chris Norton @chrisnorton16 Click To Tweet

Chris Norton

On October 16, 2010, playing for Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, Chris Norton was severely injured while making a tackle on a kickoff, fracturing his C3-C4 vertebrae. After initially being told he had a 3% chance of ever regaining movement below the neck, Chris has defied the odds by walking across the stage of his college graduation with the help of his fiancée, Emily, which has gone viral.

At the age of 20, Chris started a non-profit organization, the SCI CAN Foundation, to help others with spinal cord injuries and other neurological disorders. The foundation has raised over a half million dollars to date. Chris’s book The Power of Faith When Tragedy Strikes is an inspiring father-son memoir that recounts Chris’s seemingly insurmountable quest.

Chris has been on ABC’s Good Morning America, CBS Early Show, FOX & Friends, NBC Nightly News, featured on CBS Evening News, ABC News, TODAY, TIME, USA Today, Cosmopolitan, E!, MTV, People, The Chive, and featured internationally across the globe through media networks such as Fuji Network in Japan and Daily Mail in Europe, among others.

'I couldn’t let my physical paralysis to paralyze my mindset.'—Chris Norton @chrisanorton16 Click To Tweet

The Seven Longest Yards

He was told he’d never walk again. She was losing hope that she’d ever feel whole again. This is their miraculous true story of defying the impossible.

Quadriplegics simply do not walk again – yet millions watched as Chris Norton defied incredible odds and took step by impossible step across his graduation stage. With his fiancée Emily by his side, those unbelievable steps became the start of an extraordinary journey for them both. Told from both of their unique perspectives, this moving story invites you to find, as Chris and Emily have, that God can transform our lowest points into life’s greatest gifts.

In a moment, Chris went from a talented college football player with a promising future to a quadriplegic with a 3 percent chance of ever moving or feeling anything below his neck, much less walking again. Determined to prove the doctors wrong, he pushed himself through grueling, daily workouts to achieve his goal four years later: walking the stage to receive his college diploma with Emily’s help, and to the world’s astonished applause.

Meanwhile, Emily faced her own challenges as she sunk into a deep battle against anxiety and depression, despite her life’s outward blessings. Day by day, decision by decision, Chris and Emily committed themselves to taking the extra step, trusting God, and leaning on the help of others. In a story of courageous faith and grit, this extraordinary couple’s journey ultimately led them to tackle the seven longest yards – down the wedding aisle and into a new life together.

And what a new life it is: Chris and Emily have adopted five beautiful girls and welcomed foster children – seventeen and counting! – into their home and hearts. Let this book be your inspiration for defying your own impossible, and finding joy on the other side.

'I’ve been able to use my pain for a purpose and that has given me more energy and life than ever before.'—Chris Norton @chrisanorton16 Click To Tweet

Fighting the Battle Within with Chad Robichaux

Fighting the Battle Within with Chad Robichaux

Most of us have been in a dark place at some point in our lives. What is the first step to reclaiming ourselves? How can we find the courage to move forward when it seems like there is no way out?

Today’s guest is Chad Robichaux. He is a former Force Recon Marine, a professional MMA fighter, and a bestselling author. After coming home from deployment, he was diagnosed with PTSD.

Chad became lost, depressed, angry, and suicidal. It got to the point where his children were afraid of him and he and his wife were filing for a divorce.

But Chad experienced a moment of clarity that allowed him to make the choice to step out of the darkness and into his true purpose in life. Now he helps other men as they fight the battle within.

The definition of manhood—When you come to that point where you decide you’re not living yourself, but living for others.—Chad Robichaux

Chad Robichaux

Chad M. Robichaux is the President and Founder of the Mighty Oaks Foundation, a leading military non-profit serving the US Military active duty and veteran communities with highly successful peer-to-peer faith based combat trauma programs and combat resiliency conferences.

Chad and his team are dedicated to helping America’s military warriors and their families suffering from the “unseen wounds” of combat such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Their effort is on the front line to intercede and end the climbing 22 per day veteran suicide rate and the tragic divorce epidemic in military families. To date the program has over 1,000 alumni and has reached tens of thousands active duty service members through resiliency conferences.

Chad is a former Special Operations Force Recon Marine and DoD Contractor with eight deployments to Afghanistan as part of a Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) Task Force. He has earned an MBA and is a Board Certified Pastoral Counselor with a focus on PTSD.

Chad and his wife, Kathy, have been married for 21 years, and have three children. After years of deployments their family personally faced the challenges of PTSD. They now share a story of a victory in Christ through the struggles our warriors face returning home and have dedicated their lives to sharing that story to mentor others like them.

Chad is a widely sought after public speaker and subject matter expert on PTSD, military and veterans’ issues. He has testified in Veterans’ Courts regarding combat trauma and PTSD, wrote a best-selling book on the subject and has been featured on such media outlets as Fox News, Forbes, The O’Reily Factor, USA Today, Christian Post, Focus on The Family, The 700 Club, and a short biography film by I Am Second.

In addition to Chad’s military service he has served our nation as a Special Agent with the US Federal Air Marshal Service and the US State Department as a Surveillance Detection Senior Program Manager. Chad is also a Medal of Valor Recipient for his bravery beyond the call of duty in law enforcement.

Outside of his work with veterans Chad and his sons train and teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He is a 3 Degree Black Belt and a Former Pro MMA World Champion who has used his platform to advocate for civilian support of America’s Warriors returning home while competing in the sport’s biggest event.

If you have breath in your lungs, you have purpose. Despite what’s going on in your life, you can at any time step into that plan. All of this requires a choice, and intentionality, and calibrating your life to align with your purpose.
