pay it forward

Pay It Forward and Be a Powerful Force for Good

Pay it forward…a quote that is so powerful in our society.

Treat others as you would like to be treated. Sounds simple enough and is probably something you’ve told your kids a time or two. But when it comes to actual practice, sometimes that old adage is easier said than done. Our own personal agendas or hurts take precedence over kindness to others, as we go along our busy day.

Pay It Forward and The Butterfly Effect

(As it relates to chaos theory) the phenomenon whereby a minute localized change in a complex system can have large effects elsewhere (thanks, Google). In other words, the tiny beat of a butterfly wing has tremendous ripple effect on all things surrounding it, thus having a ripple effect on the universe. So, if this is how the small wing of a butterfly can impact the universe, then what impact can a single human interaction have likewise? Remember that person you cut off in traffic this morning (or the person who cut you off)? Think of the feeling you had after you experienced that. Most likely, that feeling carried into your next action and the response of the person on the opposite end carried into their next action.

Change the Paradigm

When we’ve had a morning that seems to go all wrong (the kids didn’t want to wake up, you and your partner had a disagreement, traffic was backed up), it’s easier to let the rest of your day follow suit. Think of the number of times you’ve said something along the lines of, “I just need this day to be over.” Instead of allowing the events in our lives to control how we feel or how we respond, be deliberate in having a positive response even when you feel least like being positive.

In this week’s Five Minute Thursday, Larry shares an incredible story of just that: positive human response to an otherwise ugly situation. The beauty of human kindness permeates even the toughest circumstances. It shows that treating others the way we would like to be treated transcends all social and class barriers and reminds us that we all have one thing in common, our humanity.

Defying All Odds with Anthony Trucks

Anthony Trucks…defying the odds.

Victim of circumstance. That is not who Anthony Trucks is. Growing up as a foster child, he chose not to fall into the stigma of the statistics for many foster children. Instead, he used that societal assumption as a catalyst for his life. He decided that he would go against the presumed outcome of foster children as failures in life and challenged all preconceived notions. With a passion for football, and the support of his foster parents, Anthony succeeded in playing college ball, going on to professional football and then on to a successful entrepreneurship in  motivating others.

Go Against the Assumptions

Just because there are statistics and societal assumptions regarding various life situations, does not mean we are doomed to fall into them. It takes an active choice to live life differently from those assumptions. No, it’s not easy, but choosing how to live your own life, despite your circumstances, allows you to break free from societal notions of how you should live your life. It’s a conscious decision to be how you choose to be, rather than how others believe you should be.

Anthony Trucks on Setting the Example

A common theme on the GDP is setting the bar for our kids. Every action we take is imprinted on their very impressionable minds. If we choose to be victims, more than likely, our children will learn those very behaviors. Without making the deliberate choice to live differently, we choose to have outside influences make the choice for us. However, if we learn how to live beyond our circumstances and change our perceived outcome, our children learn to beat the odds as well and develop skills to overcome life’s challenges.

Being Grateful

You’ve heard this a time or two on the GDP as well. While we may not be able to control our circumstances, we can control our response to them. Instead of wondering why bad things happen to us, look at those situations with gratitude. This choice affords us the opportunity to learn to make things better. After all, without those situations, we could not grow into better people.

guilt

You should NEVER FEEL GUILT Investing in Yourself

Guilt: the fact of having committed a specified or implied offense or crime (Merriam Webster Dictionary). Is taking care of yourself a crime? We sometimes treat taking care of ourselves as if we believe it is a crime because we think that taking time for ourselves is taking time away from our family. But if we are simply physically “present” and not fully focused because we are too tired, too overwhelmed, too stressed, too you name it, then our physical presence means very little.

Don’t Give Into GUILT You Are Just as Important

We love our family and friends and we would do anything for them. The one person who we really should also pay attention to is the one we look at in the mirror every morning. Include taking care of yourself as part of loving your family and friends because it allows you to show up as the best version of yourself for others in the process.

Not Really Yourself

When you play the role of martyr and do everything for everyone else, you tend to build resentment toward the people you are doing things for. But, when you take time to take care of yourself, you have refueled your mind, body and spirit so that you can show up best.

Get rid of the guilt of taking care of yourself. You are just as important as those surrounding you. After all, if you are not at your best, you certainly cannot be the best for everyone else.

mastermind

How Mastermind Can Make You a Better Man and Father

Mastermind Groups are the ultimate edge to success, accountability, and community.

“I triple dog-dare you,” this is the ultimate dare someone can give you. It’s a dare you can’t really avoid, because if you do, you’re sure to hear about from your friends for a very long time, if not forever! As kids, we are held accountable by our friends because we care about what they think and, typically, they are looking out for our best interests (remember, I said “typically”). So, why as adults do we lost this “triple dog-dare” mentality? Instead of relying on our support system (friends) to hold us accountable, we puff our chests, hold in our doubts and think we can deal with life all by ourselves-no help needed. So, with our pride calling the shots, we trudge along, silently suffering as we live our lives without asking for help when we need it most.

Mastermind

This is a point where having a group of like-minded people to give you support and advice, or accountability would come in really handy. This is where a group, a Mastermind group, would provide answers when you can’t see them yourself. A Mastermind group is simply a small group of individuals with similar interests and goals gather together (in person or remotely) to discuss relevant issues and provide advice and support when other group members really need it most. It also allows for a no-judgement zone because each member (well, really, every human) has something they are struggling with.

Accountability

When we go it alone, it’s easy to get frustrated and give up. But, if we have others around us who know what our goals are, we are more likely to stick with it because we don’t want to disappoint. As humans, we are made for community, so, pushing others out really isn’t natural. Leaning on others to give us the extra push when we need it may get us over the hurdles we come across when life gets tough. Groups like Masterminds provide this type of accountability and support and allow members to safely open up about their struggles.
While the triple-dog-dare may not be a very “adult” thing to do anymore, the idea is still relevant as we go through life. Just because we grew up, got jobs, had families doesn’t mean we still don’t need others to help us when we need it most. It’s not like a switch magically flips when you reach a certain age and you become all-knowing. The magic happens when we reach out to others, take a chance and change our lives. Mastermind groups provide this “magic” and move men forward.

Create an Unbeatable Mind, Body, and Become Sealfit with Mark Divine

Mark Divine will make you challenge yourself. This is the consistent message of Mark Divine, founder of SEALFit, author of Unbeatable Mind and Kokoro Yoga-Warrior Yoga. Right now, you are capable of more than you are right now. Mark Divine continues to prove this with countless client success stories; the GDP’s own Larry Hagner is living proof.

Physical and Mental Fitness

Mark Divine been with us before. In our previous interview with him, Mark talked about having an Unbeatable Mind through a mission, vision and power statement (this sounds familiar because we’ve incorporated it in quite a few podcasts!). In this episode, Mark expands the conversation to the physical aspect. One does not outweigh the other, as a matter of fact, mind, body and spirit are one in this practice.

What in the WOD are you talking about??

Coming from his Navy SEAL background as well as his own research, Mark has developed a physical program that is both mentally and physically challenging. The beauty of the program is it can be customized to every fitness level. Based on an idea similar to CrossFit, Mark’s SEALFit program combines the intensity of a CrossFit program with the mental focus of yoga. Worried about injuries associated with CrossFit programs? Mark’s got that covered, too! He’s put in safeguards, mentally and physically, to help you stay injury-free.

Take Your Game Up a Notch

So, maybe you are already in great shape or you simply want to find a workout program that fits your busy schedule. Mark’s program is sustainable and meets every experience level. And that guilt about taking time for yourself (remember, we had this conversation last week)? Turn that guilt to viewing this as a way to make yourself the best version of yourself in order to serve others. This is a message we continually drive home: you cannot show up as your best self if you do not take care of you first.
