Faster than Normal: Secrets of the ADHD Brain with Peter Shankman

Today, I have an awesome return guest on to talk about ADHD and ADD. Peter Shankman’s new book, Faster Than Normal, is the number one new release on Amazon. He is back to help us uncover the secrets of ADHD and give us alternatives to medication.

This is a huge topic for our generation, being fathers, and the next generation, which is our own kids. We undoubtedly have the most medicated children in history, but whether you or your child have ADHD or not, you will get a lot out of this episode!

Peter Shankman

Peter Shankman is a spectacular example of what happens when you merge the power of pure creativity with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and a dose of adventure, and make it work to your advantage. An author, entrepreneur and corporate keynote speaker, this “worldwide connector” is recognized worldwide for radically new ways of thinking about customer service, social media, PR, marketing, advertising, and ADHD.

Extreme Self-medication

Peter wasn’t diagnosed with ADHD until he was 30 years old. Since then, he has developed some wild ways of coping with his ADHD. They may seem crazy at first, but the logic is valid. What Peter has been told is that adults and children who have ADHD don’t produce enough of the brain chemicals that help us focus – serotonin, dopamine, and adrenaline. Typically, these are replaced by medication, but Peter self-medicates … by sky diving.

Peter has over 500 jumps under his belt. When he leaps out of the airplane, his brain floods with all the chemicals he is lacking. He becomes super focused, and even when the skydive is over, its effects will last for up to hours later. He brings his laptop to the hangar, so that after the jump he can toss his parachute aside and work.  In this state, Peter says he has the mental power to hammer out 10,000 words in 30 minutes.

You’ve gotta understand yourself.

Faster Than Normal

ADHD brains move much faster than a normal brain. Peter says it’s like having a Lamborghini with bike brakes. If you don’t know how to control it, you can easily veer of the road.

He has several strategies to keep his brain in check so he can use it to his advantage. They are outlined in his new book Faster Than Normal: Turbocharge Your Focus, Productivity, and Success with the Secrets of the ADHD Brain. These tips are not only for people who have ADHD, but for anyone who wants 4 more hours of productivity out of their day. Here are some highlights:

  • Follow a routine – Whether it’s you or your child who has ADHD, following a routine helps keep the ADHD bran on track.
  • Eliminate choices – Choices can be distracting, even something as simple as picking out what to wear. Simplify your life so that you don’t have too many options.
  • Exercise and Nutrition ­– Peter says exercise is crucial to taming his brain. He even goes as far as sleeping in his gym clothes and keeping his bike at the end of his bed so that he doesn’t have excuses to skip his workout.
  • Nutrition is also important, especially for ADHD kids. Choose foods that nourish the brain, not sugary cereals and pop tarts. Peter recommends high-protein and healthy carbs like fruit and vegetables.

Play the tape forward. How are you going to feel if you don’t work out and eat like shit?

  • Prioritize your time – People ask Peter how he has time to write a book. He makes time. If you want to increase the value of your life, it’s not about “I don’t have the time.” You make time for your priorities.

Save your energy to focus on them.We all have the same 24 hours a day. It’s up for you to choose.

  • Know yourself – Know what you can and cannot handle. Take care of yourself. ADHD is a condition of extremes. Peter knows he can’t have just one drink. He had to quit drinking because of that. He also can’t have just one slice of pizza, so he avoids that too.

Our ADHD Kids

Society considers ADHD a negative thing. Kids feel something is wrong with them and associate taking medicine with being sick. Not only that, when children rely on medicine all their lives and are taken off as adults, they often turn to illegal drugs and alcohol to self-medicate.

  • Get a second opinion – When a doctor’s first choice is to put your child on drugs, you don’t have to listen to him. Seek out other specialists for more information.
  • Make sure they know they’re NOT broken – Explain to your child that their brain is just faster than normal, and anything faster is good.
  • Get them outside – Don’t let your kid sit in front of the TV for long periods of time. Go walk around outside for 30-40 minutes. Get in the pool. This simple act does wonders.

We often go through the motions when communicating with our kids. Peter Shankman, says it’s important to dig deep.

 Ask questions – not just, “How was your day at school?”

Strategy Guide for Parenting ADHD Kids with Brian King

The diagnoses of kids with ADHD is at an all-time high. How do we raise them the best we possibly can so they can be the best versions of who they’re meant to be? Author, speaker, and parenting coach Brian King is here to give us a workable strategy guide for parenting ADHD kids.

Adults and children with ADHD think very differently, but as we discovered in the episode with Peter Shankman, this can be leveraged into a superpower. But what if you’re the parent of an ADHD child? The epidemic is growing past the resources parents have to educate themselves and cope.

Brian King

Brain King suffers from ADHD and dyslexia. He also has three boys who have ADHD and Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of autism. But he doesn’t feel sorry for himself or his family. Brian King’s core beliefs are to be resilient in every situation. He had experienced times of fear and helplessness, like cancer and divorce. Working through these obstacles made him determined to always be solution-focused and to see the opportunity in every adversity. Even today, after being diagnosed with a genetic connective tissue disorder, and discovering two of his sons inherited it too, Brian remains optimistic and open to learning.

See every thing as a teacher.

Unless you suffer from ADHD, it’s difficult to understand why a child simply can’t focus. There are different neural pathways involved in attention. It is believed that the release of dopamine allows a person to concentrate on the things that interest him. An imbalance of the brain chemistry is what prevents those who have ADHD from being able to focus. Most medications to treat ADHD are used to keep dopamine levels at optimum levels.

Brian King  says there are three factors he notices most in an ADHD family.

  1. Reactivity – ADHD kids are emotionally sensitive. This leads to bigger tantrums. Parents react to their child’s reactivity, compounding the problem.
  2. Incredible disorganization – Another common trait among ADHD children is disorganization. They have trouble following directions to clean up and organize, even when they’ve been told repeatedly.
  3. Parents’ Guilt – Many parents feel guilty for not being able to succeed on parenting their ADHD child on their own. The feel they’re supposed to be perfect and should not need to ask for help.

School and ADHD Kids

Most parents’ first concern is how can they get their kids to do better in school. Brian Kings says parents must look for clues as to why their kids might be resisting school. Are they being discouraged? Are they being embarrassed? Are they misunderstood?

There needs to be an alliance formed with the teacher.

Brain suggests creating a one sheet that lists what your child likes or dislikes. What frustrates him? What strategies have helped him in the past? Get the email address for every teacher your kid has and send them a copy. Let the teachers know that you will not be left out and that you will make sure that they have the resources they need to succeed. Instead of waiting till later in the school year when things start going wrong, be proactive.

Emotionally Supporting ADHD Kids

Brian King says that every parent must learn how to be mindful. When you’re mindful, you are aware of the present moment with your child. You leave the baggage from your own childhood behind and you can be in touch with your own thoughts and emotions without letting them overrule you. Then you’re in a place to choose a response. This gives your kids the space to do the same. They feel like they’re at home and safe in their own brain.

Brian’s wisdom to others dads:

Always remember that we are in this together.

He says that nothing you’re experiencing is an isolated case or a new problem. Others have gone through it before you and are happy to pay it forward. Surround yourself with good dads. Humble yourself, and reach out for help.

How to Unlock ADHD Superpowers with Peter Shankman

Could the country’s behavioral epidemic actually have benefits? In this episode, Peter Shankman shares how to unlock ADHD superpowers.

Peter Shankman has spent the past twenty years as an entrepreneur, a bestselling author, and a public speaker who teaches hundreds of thousands of people how to improve their personal and professional lives. Peter is the father of a three-year-old girl. He has also been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD.

So how did someone with ADHD become so successful? Peter believes his ADD/ADHD is a gift and hosts The Faster Than Normal Podcast, which discusses the benefits of  the fast brain and how to leverage it to make extraordinary achievements in life.

The ADD/ADHD Epidemic

Lately it seems that one or more kids or adults in every family is diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. Many speculate something must be causing it. Is it processed food? Is it too much technology? Or toxins in the environment?

Peter says ADHD has always existed; there was just no name for it until now. He also says people with a fast moving brain are the ones throughout history who attempted crazy exploits and dared to make the greatest discoveries.

Medication and ADD/ADHD

Medication is the standard treatment once a doctor diagnoses a someone with ADD/ADHD. Many parents are apprehensive about putting their child on medication, but they don’t know what else to do to help their kid get through school and deal with life.

Peter says medication is helpful. The problem is when nothing else is done to modify behavior. Once the child becomes an adult and has to stop taking the drugs, the problem is comes back. They don’t have any tools to manage their condition. They will often turn to other drugs to replace what they had been giving during childhood. This is why so many with ADD/ADHD struggle with addiction and compulsive behavior.

Therapy and ADD/ADHD

Peter Shankman says he was fortunate to have started seeing a therapist at the age of twelve, and this was a tremendous help to him. He says it’s important to discuss our flaws and grow with them. Teaching kids cognitive behavioral therapy or dialectical behavior therapy gives them a better chance of being able to manage once medication is stopped.

Tips on how to manage ADD/ADHD

Exercise
Peter is a single dad and only has time to go to the gym when his daughter is with her mother. On days she is with him, he has to be there, so he gets up at 3am to exercise on his bike for 2 hours. He knows that if he starts his day without a workout, “it’s a lesser day.”

Simplify your Life
Peter says that something as simple as having to decide what to wear can send him down the rabbit hole. To avoid this, he tries to eliminate as many choices as possible. The less you have to think to run your daily life, the more room you’ll have to think about important ideas and bigger picture goals.

Understand Yourself
ADD/ADHD not a disease, like cancer. It’s something that can be worked with. It’s important for kids and adults to remember that there is nothing wrong with being different and that they can learn how their brain works so that they can use it in a way that will benefit them.

In addition to The Faster than Normal Podcast, Peter Shankman created a course for adults to learn how to unlock their ADHD superpowers. He says that, with the right guidance, people with ADD/ADHD can use their superpower to do more in one hour than most people do in a day, and turn their ideas into great accomplishments.
