We don’t realize how important our health is until we lose it. No man wants poor health to get in the way of becoming the best version of himself, but how do we make health a priority when life gets in the way?

Today Dr. Ryan Wohlfert is back on The Dad Edge to give you the busy dad’s guide to total health. This list of simple hacks for fitness, nutrition, and sleep will fit into any lifestyle. Best of all, these habits can be incorporated into your existing schedule without having to give up other aspects of your life.

Busy Dad’s Guide to Total Health

FITNESS

  • Save the drive time to the gym by working out at home.
  • Take advantage of opportunities to take walks and runs with the dog or your family.
  • Do isometric exercises in the car or at your desk.
  • Be active and get involved while coaching kids.
  • Do 10-minute mini workouts of squats, push ups or burpees throughout the day. These will have a cumulative effect.

DIET

  • Ensure you’re getting greens, fruits, healthy fats, and proteins by setting up daily smoothies.
  • Plan your meals out for the week to avoid the last-minute need for fast food and take out dinners.
  • Make easy nutritious dinners ahead of time in the crock pot, like soups and stews.
  • Use apps to make sure you and your spouse are on the same page with meal planning and shopping.

SLEEP

  • If you can’t increase your quantity of sleep, increase the quality.
  • Set a time to turn off all devices and TVs.
  • Take the TV out of your bedroom.
  • We need thirty to thirty-five 90-minute sleep cycles per week, so it is possible to catch up on sleep cycles by napping and catching up on your days off.

Fighting the Busyness Epidemic


Most of us are busy all the time. We feel stuck and overwhelmed. This is because being busy is not necessarily being productive. Fighting the busyness epidemic starts with setting boundaries and being disciplined about what’s most important.

People want something from us every minute of every day, and we don’t know how to say no. We get sucked into a vortex of email, social media, and phone calls. We waste our time and energy on obligations and distractions that don’t move our lives forward. The most meaningful aspects of our lives are neglected.

If your marriage is heading toward a bad place, how much time are you spending learning how to reconnect with your wife? If you find yourself losing patience with your kids because you’re overwhelmed, are the things using up your time and energy worth it? What about your finances? What have you done to be proactive about budgeting, saving, and investing?

Today, we’re going to talk about fighting the busyness epidemic with a simple morning ritual that will help you discern what’s important to you, set boundaries with yourself and others, and say no to anything that does not serve you.

Tips for Eliminating Busyness

  • Every morning, create a handwritten plan of the essential things you need to do. Stick to these items to avoid being a victim to whatever people want from you in the moment. List 3 professional goals and 3 personal goals for your day.
  • Define high-value activities in your life and prioritize time for them. E.g. learning, reading, fitness, diet, family, and spiritual time.
  • Do not check email or social media when you first wake up. Designate a time period each day for answering emails and messages.
  • Limit social media and other internet activities using a timer.
  • Don’t pick up the phone every time it rings. Set aside a time to return calls.
  • Learn to say NO. If it’s not a hell yes, it’s a no!

The Transition from Boy to Man


The transition from boy to man is an epic time in the lives of our sons. As fathers, it’s our job to teach them what it means to be a man as they close the chapter on childhood and embark on the next stage of life as an adult.

In recent episodes, I talked about a rite of passage experience I created for my 11-year-old son, Mason. He hiked with me and the Elite Elevation Dad Edge Mastermind to the top of Mount Quandary in Breckenridge Colorado. I also shared the letter I read to him about The Pillars of Manhood when we reached the summit.
