time effective

Make Your Time Effective and Unforgettable

Being Time Effective is the best way to be present with our families.  The trick is to be effective with our time and not need more time in the day.

Twenty four hours. That’s what we have. That’s it. We are all equal in this fact. The difference is made when we decide how to divide our given time. Many times, though, we don’t even know where our time went.

Time Effective Means Commit to the Time

When we go into a day without a specific plan, and allow various people, events and our personal devices to hijack our schedules, we find ourselves lost. But, if we decide how we are going to spend our time and stay true to our plans, we feel more accomplished and find that we are accomplishing our goals. At first, it might be a hard habit to establish, but over time, you will find this personal mandate pays off in great rewards.

What’s Important

It’s so easy to allow our personal devices and social media to distract from what we find most important. If time with our family is critical and we spend much of our time physically with our family, but at the same time on our phones, then it’s time to make a decision. Maybe make it a rule that when you are with your family the phones are put away. This action builds an expectation that time together is sacred and that you value each other.
Our lives are busy. Everyone’s life is. With this fact, it’s easy to allow outside factors intrude on our personal goals and the things and people we value. But if we choose to set boundaries with our time and make a concerted effort to value the time of the people we love and care about, then we own our twenty four hours again and take our life back.

How to Conquer Alcohol Addiction with Ruari Fairbains

Ruari Fairbains, founder of One Year No Beer, comes on the GDP Podcast to challenge us to take a plunge into the uncommon world of 100% sobriety for one year.

Pumpkin spice beer, ale, hard cider, even Pumpkin Spiced Baileys Irish Cream are in full production and it’s the time of year when liquor manufacturers really make their holiday drinking push. Holiday parties, family gatherings and work functions seem synonymous with alcohol consumption during this season, in particular. Maybe you’ll even hear a couple stories about how things got out of hand at the office Christmas Party because Bob in accounting had one too many Jack and Cokes (sorry if your name is Bob and you’re in accounting).  But what if we made just “being” synonymous with these events? What if being sober was cool and drinking went by the wayside? Whoa, you say? Don’t take my beer, man, it’s how I get through this time of year!!

The increasingly popular podcast, One Year No Beer, challenges people to do just that: leave the booze behind for just 90 days. In this 90 days, forgo any type of alcoholic beverage and see what changes occur.

Better Health

The common thread in those who choose not to imbibe is better health. No alcohol equals no beer gut, better sleep habits, better sexual health and better health overall. Not to mention, you become more alert.

Better Employee

Those who have taken the challenge find they have a better focus at work. Better focus equals better job performance, leading to possibly better positions in the workplace. Think about having a more pleasant work experience simply because YOU feel better.

Ruari Fairbains on Better Family Time

Removing alcohol also opens you up to becoming more present with your family. Your mood will improve (let’s face it: alcohol alters our brain chemistry no matter how little or how much we consume). When you are better mentally, those around you will take notice and you will have more pleasant experiences with those you love.

Be the Example

Your kids are watching. You know this. When you handle tough social situations with alcohol, even if it is simply social drinking, your kids witness this. In their minds, alcohol equates to social situations because mom and dad use it during these times, even if it’s just a glass of wine to wind down. But if we change that paradigm and make other things synonymous with social situations, our kids will begin to see these differences as well. After all, they will learn how to behave from their parents.
So, even during this lovely fall season of Pumpkin Spiced Everything, maybe opt to remove the alcoholic version of this seasonal favorite. Instead, replace it with other events that get your endorphins going: take time out to laugh with those you love, get a bike ride in, take your clients to dinner and have a good time without the wine. You just might see that being with people without the filter of alcohol is just that much better.

win

It’s Not All About The Win!

“WIN!!  You have to WIN!!”  How many times do we shout this from the stands in a little league game?

The coach forcefully grabs the player by the face mask, an inch away from the player’s face. Coach’s screams are audible to the fans in the bleachers as his beet-red face looks as if it’s about to explode. The player, defenselessly taking the punishment cannot really hear the coach as his ears are ringing from the sheer volume of the yells. No, this is not pro or even college ball, it’s pee-wee football. If your child plays sports, you’ve undoubtedly witnessed coaches or parents who go to any length to ensure their child gets the win. Even if the tactics aren’t exactly child-friendly or nurturing, the adults are so invested in getting the win, they have little regard for how their child gets it.

What Are They Playing For?

It may seem obvious that a child should play a sport because they like it. However, there are times when parents have their kids play a sport because “I played soccer, so of course my kid’s going to play”, or “I never had a chance to be quarterback. I want my child to at least have that opportunity.” Is it more about our satisfaction or because our child truly has an interest in that endeavor? Sure the sport may build their confidence and camaraderie, but maybe it’s not their dream, but yours.

Win Values

When a child does play a sport, it’s the experience of playing that is most crucial to their development, not the win. We’ve heard time and again on the GDP that failure is one of the best gifts we can give our kids. When they always win, they don’t have a chance to fully grow, limiting their chance for success in the future. On the other hand, teaching a child to develop in all facets of the sport, including sportsmanship and winning and losing gracefully sets the tone for a healthy child and a brighter future for them.

mike mcarthy miracle morning

The Miracle Morning for Parents with Mike McCarthy

Mike McCarthy Miracle Morning for Parents will be a cornerstone book for this generation of parents.

Mornings. The alarm goes off, you hit the snooze button- once, twice, maybe three times and it is at this point you are wondering why you even set an alarm. You roll out of bed, that first step on the floor jerks you into the reality of the day ahead; getting the kids ready for school (of course they are just as excited to get out of bed as you are), work, traffic, after school activities and maybe a rushed dinner and then back to the soft comfort of your mattress to do it all over again. How we approach our mornings sets  the tone for the rest of our day.

Mike McCarthy Miracle Morning for Parents

Mike McCarthy knows this. As the author of The Miracle Morning for parents (co-authored by Hal Elrod), Mike has developed a proven process to help you not only embrace your mornings, but get you so you improve your life and that of your family. The Miracle Morning works on the premise of being deliberate in your daily actions. As a father, Mike has created The Miracle Mornings for Parents and Families, focusing on CHARMS: Creativity, Health, Affirmation, Reading and Service.

In Their Terms

Because kids don’t always enjoy journaling, Mike approaches kids through how they wish to express themselves, through creativity. So, have your child begin their day expressing their gratitude through whichever creative outlet they can.

Healthy Kids

Teach your children to fuel their bodies right in the morning. The old adage that breakfast is the most important meal of the day still rings true. Make sure you don’t skip it and work with your children to teach them to prepare the best foods to fuel their body.

Affirmation

A positive mindset can change how anyone sees a situation. Helping our kids look at even the most difficult situations through a positive lens will help them to courage through the tough times. Work with them to create an affirmation statement that will resonate with them when they begin down a negative spiral.

Read

It is only through educating ourselves that we gain knowledge and wisdom to better themselves as people. Demonstrating this habit through reading will teach your kids to continually improve themselves and keep their minds focused on positive thoughts.

Meditate

Meditation refocuses the mind and helps us to see situations in a different light. Unfortunately, many of us were not raised with this simple yet incredibly effective practice. Gift your children with this method and teach them early on to bring their minds back to focus. This will help your children find solace whenever they need it.

Service

This last element teaches kids to give back. It is a form of gratitude that will help them to be mindful of other’s needs. It’s amazing how wonderful it can be to give back and to teach a child how to be grateful through service is a gift in itself.

Your morning ritual may need an overhaul as well as that of your kids’. Try practicing these these techniques to help give your and your family a better start to everyday.

your why

What is Your WHY

Your Why…is it to be your best?  Is it to live a fulfilled life?  To selflessly serve others?  To be financially free?  To be healthy?  What is it?  Chances are you never got really clear on it…now is the time to get clear on your why!

You’re in your car and you’re going to work. You know exactly where you are going and the possible barriers to getting there. You have a mission. If we broaden that perspective to our lives, we might be able to understand and better predict the issues that may come up. Sometimes, though, we lose focus of where we are going or want to go and become bogged down in the everyday tasks that frustrate us. We lose our mission.

Your Why and One Vision

Angry, frustrated, tired. And you wake up then next morning and do it all over again. The same job, the same chores when you get home, the same arguments with your spouse. Then you ask yourself, “why?”.  That’s the right question. Once you’re there, search for your answer.  It’ll take some digging, but once you get to the core, you will have your vision.

Toss the Ego

Your ego may be the biggest challenge to identifying your why. You’ve got to check it at the proverbial door. In order to be the best father, husband and overall man you can be, you have to answer that one question.

Lead by example for you and those who look up to you. Having a why (your vision), will help you keep focus when you start to get off track and will set the stage for a better life.
