Physical and Mental Fitness

Mark Divine been with us before. In our previous interview with him, Mark talked about having an Unbeatable Mind through a mission, vision and power statement (this sounds familiar because we’ve incorporated it in quite a few podcasts!). In this episode, Mark expands the conversation to the physical aspect. One does not outweigh the other, as a matter of fact, mind, body and spirit are one in this practice.

Teach GRIT!

The Good Dad Project Podcast with Frankie Edgar was a game changer for so many reasons.  The coolest thing about the GDP and having a dad podcast is that no matter fame nor fortune, men jump at the chance to share their views, their journey, and even their struggles.

For this week’s five minute Thursday, I wanted to recap some highlights from the interview with Frankie.

When under pressure, be calm, cool, and collected

When the UFC Octagon cage doors close…anything can happen.  The secret to a successful outcome in the octagon is being prepared for anything because anything can happen.  Frankie shares that being calm, cool, and collected is absolutely necessary to be able to think rationally.

Being calm, cool, and collected is a skill that transfers from the cage to the family.  Through our journey of fatherhood, there will be situations that test us under pressure.  When we respond calmly and avoid a knee-jerk panic reaction, it illustrates our emotional resiliency.

How to teach GRIT

Teaching grit is probably one the most difficult lessons to teach our kids.  Our instinct is to protect them from anything that is difficult.  Our society also puts such an emphasis on winning at all costs.

Frankie mentioned that he loves leveraging sports to teach his kids grit.  For example, he doesn’t really care if his kids win or lose a wrestling match.  What he wants to see if how hard they fight for the win.  If there isn’t a desire and a fire in the belly to win, that is a bigger problem.  None of us can coach desire.  Desire is either there or it’s not.  However, we can teach how to leverage our desire to win to tap into our grit.  We can even leverage our losses to teach us lessons on how to win in the future.  Finally, we can teach grit through losing and failure.  A victory is even sweeter when we have to work at it extremely hard.  Lessons of grit are learned through sports and as parents we can use situations like losses to teach these lessons.

For Parents of Youth Sports:  Take a Seat and Enjoy

Frankie had some excellent advice for parents of youth sports and that’s “take a seat and enjoy.”  Be the silent voice of love and support when it comes to sports.  Its extremely difficult to not get emotionally wrapped up in our kids sports performance.  I am speaking from a father who is a parent and a coach of my kids sports teams and I see it all the time.

Parents can be extremely tough on their kids even when they think they are helping.  I didn’t really get this mentality until I read The Matheny Manifesto by Mike Matheny, manager of the St. Louis Cardinals.  If you really want to see your child love sports and if you want to see peak performance…take a seat, enjoy, and let the coaches do their jobs.

Frankie Edgar on Life Lessons from the Octagon

Frankie Edgar is a professional MMA fighter in the UFC. Frankie started his successful fighting career with a solid foundation of wrestling.  Two-time State Place Winner for New Jersey, 2nd in HS Nationals in 2000, 4x Division 1 National Qualifier for Clarion University and College Freestyle All-American in 2004.  He currently fights in the 155LB weight class in the UFC with 18 wins, 4 losses, and 1 Draw.  Frankie has 3 kids – 2 boys and 1 girl.

Frankie Edgar’s Upbringing

We are responsible for what we do, or for that fact, do not do. Frankie Edgar, UFC Champion fighter knows this very well. Growing up in New Jersey in a working class family, Frankie’s father showed his kids a life template for how to get through the good and rough times in life. Through his sacrifices for his family, Frankie learned from his own father that even when life doesn’t deal you a fair hand, it is up to the individual to do what is necessary to make the situation right.

Extreme Ownership and Life Lessons of Wrestling

Frankie took this mindset to the mat as a wrestler as well.  Frankie says the sport is different from other sports in that when you lose a match, the blame falls solely on your shoulders. There’s no one else to point the finger at. You either pinned your opponent or you didn’t. And so it goes in life: those who are successful are willing to take the blame for their mistakes and also know how to take a lesson from those mistakes.

Life Lessons Learned from the Cage

In the cage, Frankie says, even when he is faced with mind-wrecking punches, he has to remain “cool, calm and collected and make rational decisions.” Demonstrating this in the ring and in his life, he is able to set the example for his children that even in the most trying conditions, a calm mindset will help to fully understand the situation and make the best decision.

Take a Seat and Enjoy

Even when it comes to his own children, and those he coaches, he says he “take a seat and enjoy.”   He gives the same advice to parents of athletes. Instead of forcing your own desires on your kids, give them a choice so they feel empowered and know that they can make the decisions that impact their lives. (This seems to be a pervasive theme among all elite athletes we’ve spoken with).

Frankie Edgar on Teaching Grit

Overall, Frankie Edgar wants to make sure his kids learn to have grit, be good people and have a sense of culture. When it comes to his kids, Frankie says, he goes with his gut.

The Physical, Mental, and Emotional Mountains of our lives are intertwined. Let’s face it: if our body is out of whack, our mental and emotional states aren’t going to fare too well, either. Easy to say, but working on these Mountains can be a task if you don’t know how to address them. So, take out your pick axe and let’s climb them.

Breathe in, breathe out. Sounds simple enough, but many of us only use 50% of our breathing capacity throughout the day, aggravating our fight or flight response. Feel edgy during the day? It might be the way you’re breathing. Try inhaling deeply (using your diaphragm-you know, that muscle right below your ribcage) for a count of 5, then exhaling deeply for a count of 5. You just might find your stress levels decrease significantly.

As much as we need air, we need sleep. We may think sleep is over-rated, but even The Guiness Book of World Records won’t allow any entries related to sleep deprivation. Yeah, it’s that important. Our bodies truly need 7-8.5 hours of sleep per night, but the quality of sleep we get is just as important. The “magic hours” (as Shawn coins them) are between the hours of 10pm and 2am. This is when our bodies get the most regenerative benefits from sleep. Not convinced? Sleep deprivation is proven to lead to lower testosterone and is directly related to erectile dysfunction. Yikes! The lack of those Z’s can really mess with a guy.

So how do you get that quality sleep? It’s starts the minute you wake up.

  1. Try exercising upon waking; it could simply be a brisk walk.
  2. Get your room as dark as you can (in other words-no iPad time in bed)

How you start your day is just as critical as how you finish.

  1. Begin with 20-32 ounces of water
  2. Think about 2-3 things you are grateful for
  3. Spend a couple minutes a day deep breathing
  4. Adopt a positive mantra like, “I got this”
  5. Dirt drive your day-what do you want to accomplish?

Once your day’s going, how do you deal with your stress and emotions? Keep in mind that your emotions don’t define you; they are simply felt thoughts. The trick is not letting them control you. So, create some space to shift your mind-set. Is this a reactionary emotion? If so, think about what the best course of action would be in the situation. What is going to lead you to victory in that moment?

Ahhh. Finally, the end of the day. Sometimes we don’t have the best days. Even on our worst, we should take some time to reflect on the top 3 things that really made an impact. If you didn’t have the best day, what are 2 things you learned from that day? This mind set helps to get us to appreciate the epic moments and learn from our not-so-stellar times.

Happiness-we have 40% control over this (50% from genetics and 10% circumstance). So take the 40% you can control and direct your focus on what brings you happiness now-don’t postpone it!
Part of your happiness resides in your relationships with others. Biologically, we view isolation as a threat. Let’s say you have a disconnect with your spouse. Your mind sees this as a biological threat. In order to overcome this, look at the 3 pillars of an emotionally healthy relationship: Accessible, Responsive, Engaged (ARE). ARE you there in these ways? See? Knowing how to use the skills you already have in your arsenal will help you climb your everyday Mountains. Of course, there are 2 more that need to be addressed in more depth, but we’ll climb them another time.

About Mark Divine

Mark Divine

Mark Divine is a highly sought after speaker, coach, author and makes frequent media appearances to discuss Seal way of life.

He is from upstate New York with a degree in economics from Colgate University and an MBA in Finance from New York University Stern School of Business. Mark’s first career was with Coopers & Lybrand (now PriceWaterhouse Coopers) as a Certified Public Accountant..

Four years after being with Coopers, Mark left behind the corporate world to pursue his vision to become an elite Navy SEAL officer. At 26 he graduated as honor-man (#1 ranked trainee) of his SEAL BUD/s class number 170. Mark served for nine years total on Active Duty and eleven as a Reserve SEAL, retiring as Commander in 2011.

Mark embarked on his third career as an entrepreneur in 1996 by co-founding the successful Coronado Brewing Company (CBC) and founding the web e-commerce site www.NavySEALs.com. He later sold his interest in CBC, but continues to run NavySEALs.com as the leading web site for gear and information about the SEALs. In 2006 he launched US Tactical, a government contracting business where he gained contracts with Naval Special Warfare Group ONE for training support and with the Navy Recruiting Command for a nationwide mentoring program for SEAL trainees. This latter program was credited with increasing the quality of Navy SEAL candidates and reducing the attrition rate at BUD/s by up to 5% and was the inspiration for SEALFIT.

Mark Divine’s Unbeatable Mind and Fatherhood Connection

In this episode, Mark gives several examples of improving our fatherhood journey by forging mental toughness.

Proper Breathing will drastically help you reduce stress in every area of your life.  The average person takes 16-20 breaths per minute and breathe from their mouth.   These short breaths result in higher stress levels, reduced levels of energy, and higher levels of anxiety.  Breathing completely through the nose and with our diaphragms results in a full breath and utilization of 50% more lung capacity.  Proper breathing also results in more energy and less anxiety.  In the show, Mark explains the exact physiology behind proper breathing and exactly what it does.

In this episode, Mark talks about how we develop “the five mountains of character” to forge an unbeatable mind and mental toughness.
