Rob Youngblood on How To Successfully Raise A Family As a Single Dad

Rob Youngblood, TV personality, motivational speaker, victim of a Chuck Norris beating (LOL!), and single father with purpose comes on the GDP Podcast to talk about successfully raising kids through divorce.

Be the best version of yourself. It’s a wonderful phrase and so true, but when you don’t know who you really are in the first place, being the best version of you is nearly impossible. Rob Youngblood, former actor and news anchor and, currently, motivational speaker and coach, talks with the GDP about getting yourself to that best version as well as being a great dad, even in the face of difficult circumstances.

The Man in the Mirror

Sometimes we tell ourselves our lives are great, even when there is a storm of turmoil raging inside. The hardest part is facing the stuff we don’t like about ourselves, confronting the inner demons so we can be our best selves. Identifying and facing those issues is not easy, but it helps us grow and provides a great example for those who count on us.

Rob Youngblood on Prioritizing

Life will always throw curve balls. It’s what we do with these curve balls that defines who we are and our resiliency. Sometimes these challenges force us to choose between our personal wants and our responsibility to those who rely on us-AKA our children. These choices aren’t always easy to make, even though we love our children more than anything. Prioritizing our wants versus what we need to do puts the focus on what we deem important.

Be Real

As men, we a generally not known to be expressive with our feelings. We tend to bottle up our anger and frustration and sadness when we really should be sharing these emotions. Having a solid and trusting support system you can feel safe expressing these emotions in is crucial to our overall health and well-being.

Our lives inevitably change as we get older. Embracing these changes and providing a healthy example of how to manage these changes for our children will help us and our kids enjoy life that much more.

Sean Whalen Taking 100% Responsibility and Being a Lion Not a Sheep

Sean Whalen, founder of “Lions Not Sheep” comes on the GDP Podcast to share his views on masculinity, being a father, and taking ownership.

Blame. It’s what we do when we can’t face our own responsibility for failures in our life. It’s so easy for us to point to the plank in someone else’s eye when it’s too hard for us to look at our own plank. Sean Whalen, founder of Lions Not Sheep, explains his own struggle to get to the point where he could be the best person for himself and others.

Sean Whalen and Why Lions Eat First

It is so easy for us to take care of others, thinking that if we just do what we think everyone else wants us to do, that all will be well. When we aren’t getting the response from others we expect from these actions, then we get frustrated and tend to give up. The situation may seem counterintuitive, but if we look at investing in ourselves first, we can show up so much more for others. So, be the lion who eats first so you can be strong for your pride.

Wrong Signal

We have been taught through our upbringing, religion, society that we can’t be selfish. No, you shouldn’t step on others to get what you want, but taking time to get yourself right can only improve your relationships and make you a better person. Happiness can only come from within.  We find ways to block out that negative wrong signal by whatever means necessary to get to the best version of you.

Don’t Be Prideful

As men, when we struggle, we internalize the struggle. Where we fail is when we don’t turn to others who have been through a similar struggle, and we flounder. Giving ourselves the “ok” to get help, we find that we are more successful when we have the tools to get out of the proverbial hole.  Swallow that pride, get out and find the help you need from someone who’s been there, and get better.

Sean Whalen and Failing Forward

We have to be real. Real in every aspect of our lives: our kids, our spouse, our job. In a world where everything is politically correct, we need to learn it’s ok to fail, to learn to fail forward and be better because of our failures. Doing so will only set the correct example for our kids and those around us. Being the lion in your own life only resonates to others to be the best version of themselves.

Uncover Your Money Type and Pay Off Your Home Mortgage Faster with Jordan Goodman

Jordan Goodman, America’s Money Answer Man, is back on the GDP Podcast!

The GDP takes a deeper dive with financial expert Jordan Goodman. Last time with Jordan, he discussed mortgage optimization. This idea basically makes your home mortgage work for you. Instead of paying off your mortgage over 30 years, Jordan Goodman shows you how to pay off your mortgage in less time and save you money. Who doesn’t want that? There was such a great response to our last show with Jordan we decided to bring him back on the show this time to answer some of your questions and help to clarify what mortgage optimization can do for you.

Jordan Goodman Discussing Your Money Type

One of the key questions asked of Jordan is how our relationship with money affects how we go about our daily response to our finances and if mortgage optimization would work for all of us. Of course, understanding your relationship with money is key to determining if a program like mortgage optimization is right for you. Knowing if you’re a squirrel or a high roller (or one of the other money personality types) with money will help determine how you could use this program to help you pay off your mortgage faster and put more money in your monthly pocket.

The Banks Have You Looking the Other Way

Don’t be fooled by the bank idea of what your mortgage should look like. Optimization has been used globally for years and just recently has been introduced in the US. However the idea of allowing your money to work for you rather than your money working for the bank is not something the banks are going to want to inform you of freely. So in this episode Jordan clearly outlines how identifying your emotional response to money as well as your spouses emotional response to money will help determine if this program will work for you and then how to get it started.

Our Money and Our Kids

At the GDP, we know it’s important to show our children how to respond to every situation. We have a consistent message and present guests that help us show up as better people to those who depend on us. This also includes how we respond to our finances and  what are emotional tie  is with money and how we can help our children establish a more positive relationship with money in their future. If we demonstrate a better grasp of making our money work for us rather than the opposite, our children see that habit and are able to replicate it on their own for their own family. What a great gift to give them so that they can have a more positive and healthy relationship with money in their future as well.

intentions

Intentions Are Not Enough

Intentions…What we “intend” to do does not always come to fruition.

Intentions and the Old Saying

What’s the phrase? “The road to (fill in the blank; we are family friendly after all), is paved with good intentions.” Maybe that’s taking it a bit too far, but sometimes our intentions are shadowed by actions that speak against what we are trying to accomplish.

Remain Focused

The key to ensuring your intentions are reflected by your actions is to stay focused on the desired outcome. It’s just like setting a goal, if you don’t have a realistic road map to get there, you may not achieve your goal. The same with your intentions. If you don’t have a plan when life gets in the way of acting on your intentions, then you may get sidetracked. That’s ok. You’re only human. Just get back on the original path and try again.

Be Honest

When you do find yourself straying from your intentions, be honest with yourself and others. Don’t make excuses for why you got off track, just own up to the fact, apologize where and when necessary (yes, even to yourself) and move forward. Remember that it is not the mistakes we are remembered by, but the way we respond to the mistake.

Be Intentional

Be intentional about your intentions. If you really intend to be a strong role model for your kids, then be that. However, make sure you define what that looks like so you have less chance of veering off course or not meeting expectations. Those around you will take notice and you will find you don’t have to vocalize your intentions when they become your habits.

How Mastermind Can Make You a Better Man and Father

Mastermind Groups are the ultimate edge to success, accountability, and community.

“I triple dog-dare you,” this is the ultimate dare someone can give you. It’s a dare you can’t really avoid, because if you do, you’re sure to hear about from your friends for a very long time, if not forever! As kids, we are held accountable by our friends because we care about what they think and, typically, they are looking out for our best interests (remember, I said “typically”). So, why as adults do we lost this “triple dog-dare” mentality? Instead of relying on our support system (friends) to hold us accountable, we puff our chests, hold in our doubts and think we can deal with life all by ourselves-no help needed. So, with our pride calling the shots, we trudge along, silently suffering as we live our lives without asking for help when we need it most.

Mastermind

This is a point where having a group of like-minded people to give you support and advice, or accountability would come in really handy. This is where a group, a Mastermind group, would provide answers when you can’t see them yourself. A Mastermind group is simply a small group of individuals with similar interests and goals gather together (in person or remotely) to discuss relevant issues and provide advice and support when other group members really need it most. It also allows for a no-judgement zone because each member (well, really, every human) has something they are struggling with.

Accountability

When we go it alone, it’s easy to get frustrated and give up. But, if we have others around us who know what our goals are, we are more likely to stick with it because we don’t want to disappoint. As humans, we are made for community, so, pushing others out really isn’t natural. Leaning on others to give us the extra push when we need it may get us over the hurdles we come across when life gets tough. Groups like Masterminds provide this type of accountability and support and allow members to safely open up about their struggles.
While the triple-dog-dare may not be a very “adult” thing to do anymore, the idea is still relevant as we go through life. Just because we grew up, got jobs, had families doesn’t mean we still don’t need others to help us when we need it most. It’s not like a switch magically flips when you reach a certain age and you become all-knowing. The magic happens when we reach out to others, take a chance and change our lives. Mastermind groups provide this “magic” and move men forward.
