Breaking the World of Impossible with Todd Stottlemyre

Former Major League Baseball star, Todd Stottlemyre, tells us how to dream big, set goals, and create a plan to break the world of impossible.

Todd Stottlemyre is a former MLB starting pitcher, entrepreneur, speaker, and a transformational mindset coach. His book, RELENTLESS SUCCESS, comes out on July 1st, 2017. He also is the proud father of four daughters and one son.

Todd’s dad, Mell Stottlemyre, was a pitcher for the Yankees, and Todd grew up in Yankee Stadium among baseball’s most legendary players – Yogi Barra, Roy Munson, and Mickey Mantle.

He knew since he was a child that he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps, and made his way to the big leagues. Like his dad, he also played with the world’s greatest players and was part of three different champion teams.

After his baseball career, Todd built a Wall Street firm that specialized in asset management. He was very successful, but he says it was only because he failed a bunch of times and learned how to jump up and try again.

Todd Stottlemyre considers himself blessed. His parents said you can, you will, go for it. He has achieved his goals and he’s gotten to the point where he wants to give back. Now he helps other people break the impossible to realize their dreams.

Chase your dreams, not someone else’s

Todd Stottlemyre says a goal becomes real by a massive desire that comes from within. There is no I want to do. There is only I must do. Some people might ask, what are you going to do if you don’t make it? If you have a true goal, that’s not a thought.

Just like in baseball, not every major league player’s son follows in his father’s footsteps, but Todd fell in love with the game early on. His Dad would come home from road trip and play ball with his brother and him before going to the stadium. If his dad saw them playing and they weren’t having fun, he’d tell them, “if you’re not having fun, don’t do it.” He didn’t care if they wanted to dig ditches, if when they dug a ditch, they did their best. Sports wasn’t required by his parents. They wanted him to follow his own dreams, work hard, live a life of passion, and strive to be the best at whatever they did.

However, Todd did share the same passion for baseball as his father. There was no I want to play. It was an I must play, and he focused and sacrificed to make his dream come true.

Habits and Sacrifice

Success is simple, but not easy. Small behavioral changes and action steps lead you closer to your goal, but you must make sacrifices and adopt new habits.

Some say it takes twenty-one days for a new habit to stick. Others say it takes much longer. It might be different for everyone. Todd says to force yourself to do new habits until you don’t have to think about it anymore. Just like when you were a kid and your parents reminded you to brush your teeth over and over, every night. It had to be drilled in. Now you brush your teeth without having to consciously think about it.

The good news is that successfully adopting new habits builds momentum into the next habits. Once you see it working, you believe in can happen, and it makes new habits much easier to take on in the future, and if your habits are part of your big picture goal, there will be no more should do’s, just do’s.

Balance

While you’re working toward your goals, Todd says it’s crucial to maintain balance in eight areas of your life – spiritual, family, relationships, health, job, financial, business, and personal development.

When striving toward goals, you can drive so hard, it consumes you. Sometimes you can forget the other pieces of your life and you are in danger of losing balance.

Todd sees these eight areas of life as a wheel. When one or two spokes in the wheel break down, you have a wobbly wheel. Life becomes unstable.

Family is one of the most important spokes in the wheel of life. Todd remembers one day when his wife told him, “When you’re at home, you’re not really home.” She said even the kids noticed, and wondered why dad always had to be on the phone or in the office working.

Todd’s advice on that balancing act is, “Wherever you are, be there 100%.”  When he’s on a date with his wife, there’s no calling, texting, email, or social media. When he’s working, he’s focused on work. He doesn’t take other calls while he’s in a meeting. The goal is to be well rounded and to keep the wheel rolling smoothly toward your goals.

Don’t Play the Victim

Some of us might think we’re not in ideal circumstances to chase our dreams. Todd says that when you’re stuck in a place that you feel is unfair, if you’re struggling, remember that it’s happening to you for a reason. The problems you’re facing now are giving you the wisdom that you will need for something around the corner you can’t see. Instead of playing the victim, play the champion and learn from the challenges that face you.

Ignore the Haters

Naysayers are going to try to take the wind out of your sails. You’ll come across small-minded people and even friends that will say “you can’t do that.” As we get older, we buy into all the reasons it’s not going to work.

Remember that most people who’ve done extraordinary things were surrounded by naysayers, but once they broke into the world of the impossible, then it became possible. If great achievers listened to the haters, they would’ve never crossed the threshold to the next level.

Seek Mentors

It’s human nature not to be coachable, especially men. We’re stubborn. We like to think we got it all figured out. We don’t even like to stop and ask for directions. But most successful people have had a mentor or group of mentors behind them.

Getting coached doesn’t mean you’re inadequate or lacking in talent. Coaches don’t stretch the human performance, coaches help us understand what our potential is. They see areas for improvement we don’t see. They shorten the learning curve

Todd’s Dad Wisdom

Todd Stottlemyre’s parents never said, you can’t do that, that’s crazy. He credits them for his winning attitude in life. That’s why he says that as dads, we must empower and encourage our kids no matter what. You, yourself, might think your kids are going to fail and be tempted to warn them that they might not make it. Don’t be the naysayer. You might not even know anything about the goal they’re trying to achieve. Ask yourself, is this an opinion?

Todd also urges dads to spend quality time with their families. Again, wherever you’re at, just be there. Do the listening, Be genuinely interested. Tell them you love them. Especially when it comes to the dad/daughter relationships, it’s important for them to know they’re loved. Don’t wait for them to approach you.

How to Feed Your Courage and Starve Your Fear

COURAGE is something every dad needs more of…the question becomes:  “How do we develop more of it?”

We can’t out run stress. It’s simply a fact of our daily lives. The idea that we “eliminate” stress from our life sounds great, but that means cutting out the parts that are most meaningful. Think about it: the parts of our lives that make us who we really are come from areas that bring stress: our work, our kids, our significant others. These aren’t “bad” stressors, but they are part of our lives. It’s not a matter of cutting these areas out, but a matter of how we handle them.

 

Always Darkest Before the Dawn

 

Truth. All too often, we get caught up in the negativity of our circumstances and fail to see what good might actually come out of them. Our mind will take us where we lead it. If we choose to ask questions like “why did this happen to me?” or “what did I do to deserve this?” we certainly will find ourselves at the end of a self-destructive spiral of pity and self-loathing. Yuck, we’ve all been there. But, if we choose instead to view a circumstance from a state of abundance instead of scarcity, we just might see that our “negative” circumstances have a lot to teach us.

 

What are You Feeding?

 

Our attitude about stress is all about what we choose to feed: fear or courage. We’ve talked about feeding the Fear or the Courage Wolf before and this is exactly what we have been encouraging. Choosing to nurture the Courage Wolf through affirmation statements gives us the strength to get through the circumstance and persevere. Whereas feeding the Fear Wolf only strengthens our stress, making us anxious and eventually paralyzing us from taking any positive action.

 

Choosing the Statement

 

It doesn’t have to be complicated. A simple phrase like, “I’ve got this” in moments of even the greatest doubts will trigger our minds to think in a state of positive action. Navy Seals even use these statements to get through their most difficult moments in training and the field (see the Mark Divine episode for more!). Like anything in life, how we confront stress is how our mind and body will respond. What it boils down to is the fact that we simply don’t give our minds enough credit for what they are really capable of.

 

It’s About the Questions

 

And what it also comes down to are the questions we ask ourselves. Really, how positive is it to ask ourselves, “what did I do to get here?”. After this question, your mind will tell you EXACTLY what you did to get “here”. Because our minds go where we ask them to go, we tend to lead them down a negative path with this line of questioning. A better, more positive question might be, “what can I learn from this event?”. Through this type of questioning we will find ourselves better poised to handle whatever the stressor might be and learn from it for the next time around.

 

We’ve just touched the surface here. Knowing that we, as men, face the societal challenge to be strong and unbending, we tend to shy away from anything that others might perceive as “weak”. But instead of suffering in silence from these stressors, learning to reprogram how we deal with them will only strengthen our relationships and better our lives.

Balance for Working Dads is Attainable


Balance is and having the right mentality is critical to our success as fathers.

This past week we interviewed Jeff Pelizzaro, founder of 18Strong.com.  I wanted to highlight some of the pearls that came from his interview because there was a lot!  Ultimately, its about pursuing our passions while having the right mindset, focus, and boundaries.

Do What You Love!

Jeff took a leap of faith leaving his job of being a physical therapist to pursue something he was extremely passionate about.  Jeff had it all from a “societal success standpoint.”  He had: a good job, he had benefits, he had a 401K, he had “security.” .

However, Jeff was sacrificing something that was most important to him…his purpose.  Jeff felt an intuitional pull to do something he loved and to help people along the way.  He has a passion for: fitness, the game of golf, and helping people.  He has now developed an online business, has a successful podcast, and is now a published author!  Not to mention he is doing all these things while creating ultimate balance in his life.  None of this would have happened if he didn’t listen to his intuition and take a leap of faith.  At some point, every successful person took a leap of faith and decided to pursue their true passion.  Guess what…so can you

Balance Means There is More to Life than just the Dollars

Jeff gave several examples of how he creates a healthy balance of boundaries between work and family time.  For example, even though Jeff would make a ton of money working with clients on the weekend, he refuses to do it.  He even mentioned that Saturdays and Sundays are lucrative days in his field.  However, he knows the importance of enjoying his time with family because he knows these years are only here for a short time.

You Can Do What You Love and Still Be an Amazing Dad

It is terrifying making the decision to leave a secure job and pursue a dream.  The pressure is on us as fathers to provide and take financial care of our families.  When we can’t to that, it can be one of the most de-masculating things in our lives.  However, when you take a leap of faith and pursue your dream job, you might be shocked what the universe will deliver.  I’m not saying take a leap without a plan.  Be smart about it.  Write out a plan.  Put some savings aside for the rough times.  Figure out the monthly income your family needs to survive.  Then…when you are ready…LEAP.  Go do your dream.  Chase it with fury.  Most importantly, being a happier more fulfilled you will allow you to be a better dad!  BOOM!!  There you have it!  Go get it!

Let’s dream for a minute. Wouldn’t it be great if that “crazy” idea for a new business really became a reality? You could do what you really want to do and provide even more for your family. Maybe, just maybe, that idea would grow exponentially and help you realize even bigger dreams. Oh, but you just don’t have the time and that dream really sounds great, but it’s so out there. Is it? Over our last 61 (yes, 61) podcasts, we’ve heard from very successful men about becoming your best self and achieving your greatest potential as an individual and a father. Jeff Pelizzaro is no different: he’s taken his “day job” and turned it into a focused, value-added revenue stream by targeting a very specific niche audience-golfers.

Jeff Pelizzaro on Taking the Leap and Pursuing His Passion

Jeff Pelizzaro’s podcast and business, 18 Strong, helps golfers at all levels achieve their greatest game on and off the course. Through nutrition and physical training, Jeff shows golfers how to tweak their nutrition and fitness to fit their particular needs. Sounds like a dream job, right? It wasn’t always birdies and double eagles, though. Jeff Pelizzaro started as a physical therapist, working long hours and eventually becoming burned-out; he had the opportunity to change his entire focus to, well, golf. In doing so, however, it meant a big change and a risk for his family. After all, changing from serving a variety of clients to an incredibly niche-based business is risky. In the end, he made the leap and now helps golfers from amateurs to pros perfect their game.

Sacrificing Money to Enjoy What Money Can’t Buy

It wasn’t overnight, though. As always, these great ideas take sacrifice and identifying a balance between home life and work life. Jeff has days, he says, when he’s playing with his kids and a thought about a client crosses his mind. He says it’s definitely not easy, but he’s able to refocus and make sure he is present with his family when he spends time with them. With the help of his wife, Jeff is able to balance the time he needs for his unique business with the time he wants to spend with his family.

YOUR DREAM – GO DO IT!!!!

Back to your dream. Maybe you have a great idea for the current business you’re in or maybe it’s something new all together. Whatever it is, though, if you want to do it and it adds value for others, give it a shot. Sure, taking a risk can have its scary moments, but not taking that risk can mean regret.
